Can't add mp3 files to ITunes

Would really appreciate some help as I'm about to go crazy!

When I'm trying to add new albums to iTunes they just won't stay in the library. They are mp3 format, not corrupted, not appearing at all. They seem to be uploading as usual after I drag the file into iTunes, but just don't appear in my library thereafter. I have checked several times and they are definitely not there, tried adding files individually, also tried converting them to other iTunes compatible formats- nothing.

Please help, I've got all this great music that won't stay put!

I can't explain why but I've come up against this problem many times - from trying to add MP3s that iTunes just fails to import thru to using iFlicks to bring in movies and TV where it comes up with an error on some files but not all.

SOLUTION: Start iTunes in 32 bit mode et voila! They go in. Can't explain why or how but it always works for me. Strangely the files that only import in 32 bit mode play back in 32 AND 64 bit mode.

Go figure.

Enjoy.

I had the same problem where I couldn't import a file to my Music library. It turned out to be a file name issue within the Properties attribute of the file I was trying to import.

I had copied file "A" to file "B" and wanted to import "B" into iTunes. "A" already existed in iTunes. I couldn't figure out why "B" wouldn't import until I right-clicked on "B" in my source folder and went to Properties. The file name on the General tab said "B" but the file name on the Details tab still said "A". What you see listed as the file name in iTunes apparently comes from the Details tab (if it's populated) and I already had "A" in iTunes. So iTunes saw it as a duplicate. Once I changed the file name in the Details tab to "B" I was able to import it to iTunes. So if you have a value in both the General tab and the Details tab make sure the name in the Details tab is unique to iTunes.

I'm on iTunes release 11.0.3.42. I don't want to upgrade because it always hoses something up. I'm a singer and use iTunes to play music for my gigs and can't afford to lose my set lists or have them not work correctly. It's taken me a long time to get them set the way I want.

Hi y'All,

I faced the same issue while trying to add MP3 files from mac to IPhone 5 S. After a persistent tweaking attempt, I might just found a possible work around.

Here's my machine specification:

1. A mac book with OSX version 10.9 (Maverick).

2. Quick time player Version 10.3 (727.1)

3. ITunes 11.1.3

What I did was:

1. Open the MP3 song(s) in quick time player.

2. Go to File -> Export -> ITunes

3. Go to ITunes -> Recently added (you should be able to find your MP3 file here)

4. Add to a playlist (Optional)

Just my two cents. Hope it works for you.

Finally I've got the answer for this nerve-cracker odd !

Ok. It's all about decoding those mp3 your iTunes can't read (they can be decoded to obtain a new mp3 or any other compatible file)

I used atube catcher - the video decoder tool (it can decode mp3 files as well)

Just select mp3 320 kbps as the output file

Open the new file

Voíla !

Im having the same problem except when I add the mp3 songs that I want, it will only do certain ones while the other ones don't appear in iTunes at all. I've tried doing them one at a time and in a folder. Why do you have to be so hard iTunes?

Hello! I have the same problem, except my songs won't open with iTunes even with that playlist method. I tried that MP3 Scan + Repair program and it actually says that the file format is unknown, so I'm not sure what's happening.

I originally copied the songs off a CD via iTunes using a Windows computer, and I put the songs onto a USB to play into a car. It worked with iTunes for Windows (or I think), but now, I got a new MacBook Pro but when I click on the file, nothing opens. If I drag the file into iTunes, iTunes doesn't want to recognise it (it doesn't come up with an error message or anything).

However, the file does open in QuickTime. Someone, whom I think was from another thread, suggested to export the file as a .wav and then it would work. But there is no option to do that, so I tried File > Export > iTunes as it was the closest thing, but it didn't work.

So would anyone know?

Ta xx

EDIT: Okay, turns out that exporting to iTunes actually worked! I suppose QuickTime converts the file to AAC so then it could play in iTunes.

So if anyone has this same problem, try this, and make sure to look through your library properly XD

Hi All,

I had the same problem, where I actually could import some music files, but then appeared in the Podcast section of iTunes.

By comparing details of files in my iTunes library (picking it from the Music folder) and those of the file I needed to import, I realised the speed (in bits) was different: 128kbps for the file I needed to import vs.160kbps for files in my iTunes library.

I have then decided to convert said file to match the 160kbps the iTunes file showed (I did this using Nero Recode), keeping the same format (mp3), but changing the kbps to 160.

I have imported the file and that finally worked 😉

Give it a try!
