Saving always goes to documents folder

Hello,

I've posted this problem before but haven't received a fix for it yet. Perhaps I'm just explaining it wrong. Simply put every time I go to save a document, instead of going to the last folder used in the program it always goes to the documents folder of the user. Also the last folder does not even show up in the drop down of the save window, only the path to the documents folder. The various programs do remember recent documents opened. But the "open file" always goes to documents, not last folder. This was not always the case, but has been for the last 6months or so and I can't seem to correct it.

I've tested the system by adding a new account and seeing if it happen there also or if it is just the one account. But the same situation exists, so it seems to be universal to this computer.

Based on previous threads this is what I've attempted so far:
Deleted in: (myhome)/Library/Preferences
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
com.apple.launchservices.plist
com.adobe.xxxx.plist
com.macromedia.xxxx.plist
ALSO Deleted : /library/caches/com.applelaunchservices-xxxx.csstore (all)

Then restarted computer. This however has not resolved the problem. I know all the work arounds of "put folder in sidebar" and what not, but that doesn't fix the problem. I want to fix this problem.

thanks
mark

biggest change in the time period was the upgrade to 10.4

Ah! I think I have the glimmering of an idea, unfortunately what to do if I'm right to minimize the amount of work you would need to do to fix it is way beyond my depth.

Here's the idea:

If you did an upgrade install of Tiger over a pre-existing Panther install there may be some Panther system pieces that did not got over-written by the Tiger upgrade. Specifically I'm thinking something in the realm of shared libraries used by NavigationServices for Carbon apps. The applications that you mention that aren't working are all Carbon, those that are working are Cocoa applications. Therefor it may be that some carbon library or system gizmo used by Carbon applications, which no longer exists in Tiger, is hanging around from Panther and the Carbon applications are attempting to use it, but it no longer works.

If my theory is right then unless someone knows just what might still be there that shouldn't be, the only solution is an archive and install, or maybe even an erase and fresh install of everything. Personally, having seen a late beta of Tiger in action, and having severe doubts about how finished it could possibly be a mere matter of months later, I left my Panther install as it was and did an install of Tiger onto a drive of its very own. I knew which support files needed to be copied, and where they were, for things like Photoshop, so I did not bother to reinstall the applications. They are still on the Panther drive and run just fine in Tiger.

If you don't want to try an archive and install I think your only recourse is to live with the problem. When Leopard arrives buy the full install disk and install de novo on a drive of its very own and reinstall your applications.

Francine,

ah crap.

Well I really appreciate you sticking through the whole process. Your hypothesis seems very probable and would explain alot. The solution I had a feeling was going to come my way eventually- clean install. I've been trying to avoid that and have lived with it for this long. I'm now also at the crossroads of considering a new computer, so I've been prolonging the clean install. I guess its time to make some decisions.

If anyone does have some ideas regarding fixing the "shared libraries used by NavigationServices for Carbon apps" problem suggested by Francine I would love to hear them, otherwise I guess I'll just continue to live with it for now.

Thanks again

Oh my, you are in a bad decision space at the moment! If you wait for the new Intel towers, you'll have to wait even more before Adobe ships universal binaries and then pay the upgrade price--and who knows if M$ even has a universal binary for Office in the pipeline. So you would have to accept running your main applications slower in Rosetta for awhile. If you buy a new G5 tower right now your current apps will run blazingly faster, but your machine will be the last of a production run. Having had a first of a production run I can testify that that wasn't the best choice, in a very short time the machine was obsolete. Also had a last of a production run, which was a better choice, but the machine was still obsolete in a couple of years (would not run OS X). My current machine is from the middle and is still perfectly capable of doing everything....well, except booting XP. 😉 Tough choices!

I'm having a similar problem to this -- I can not get the applications to go to the current folder I'm working in when I'm doing a "save" or even "placing" a file. There used to be system preferences you could specify to do this. I'm working in latest version of Tiger and I did do a clean install -- in fact I wiped the whole drive before I installed -- so it cannot be a problem left over from an earlier version of the OS.

Is anyone aware of where a preference file would be in system preferences to set file handling on a system-wide basis? I'm using Creative Suite Premium 2 / FileMaker Advanced, etc. Every program I use goes back to the desktop and I have to navigate to where I've opened the file in the first place.

I've exhausted my ability to search for this matter -- this is the only reference I've come across re the problem. Thanks in advance!
