Downgrade iOS 6 to iOS 5

I had a working iPhone 4 running iOS 5. I carelessly let it upgrade to iOS 6. Now it can't access the internet via the LAN at all. I would therefore like to downgrade to iOS 5.

I have read on the internet that Apple does not support that. Is that correct? If so, can someone link to an official statement from Apple to that effect? If not, can someone link to the official procedure for downgrading?

I know that I can wait until hopefully Apple finds out about this problem and then hopefully fixes it but in the meantime I have 2 very expensive telephones.

My problem is that on 1 out of the 2 iPhone 4S's we have, the wifi has stopped working. A large number of people are having the greyed out wifi problem which is aparently down to a chip overheating which is more likely to happen with IOS 6.

The wifi problem began when the phone was updated to IOS 6.

The other phone was never updated from IOS 5 to IOS 6, and doesn't have the greyed out wifi problem.

So, as Apple isn't supporting downgrading IOS, could I wipe the phone with IOS 6 and restore the IOS 5 software from the backup of the phone which works?

Wiiping the phone and restoring from backup has no effect on the version of iOS on the phone. There is no supported means (meaning there is no method that doesn't involve hacking your phone or using illegally obtained software) of downgrading the OS.

Best of luck.
