iPad mini headphone jack doesn't work

Just got an iPad mini and the headphone jack doesn't work. All audio comes out of the main speakers and he headphones are silent. The headphones work fine with my iPhone. Any thoughts? Is this a hardware or software problem?

I have same problem every so often I plug in aux cord to headphone jack to listen threw the radio and just plays music threw ipad mini speakers, doing reset works every time to fix the problem but is only a short time fix and is a recurring problem with my ipad mini. Apple needs to work on this problem and address it.. it's very agravating to spend the amount of money on the device and after being a month old have to start resetting it for it to function properly is un exceptional. Other than this issue ipad mini is awsome!!!

This has happened with my mini iPad which is only 2 weeks old. I am travelling in the UK from Oz and I know that I didn't have this problem on the plane as I think I would have had some complaints! Have done the hard reset, thanks to those who explained what to do, and thankfully this has worked. Will be interesting to see if this happens again. Hopefully Apple will see these threads and provide a fix!

iPad mini is less than 3 months old, I've tried this fix more than 7 times now and nothing. I love my Mac products, however I'm extremely aggravated by this and don't have time to be Googling fixes for something that shouldn't be an issue in the first place, and I don't have the patience or time to be returning a product over and over until I manage to get one that works properly. Anyone experiencing the same lack of success?
