SOS

Hello,

Like many others, my 2011 iMac has a problem where it kernel panics during sleep and reboots itself on 10.8.2. I talked to Apple on the phone and they said the graphics card was broken and to bring it into the store. At the Apple Store, they did not find anything wrong with it, and it did not kernel panic while they had it, and said that while I brought it to the store, it having been unplugged for that long reset the SMC, which may have fixed it. I got it home, reconnected it and everything, put it to sleep, and it happened again. Almost every time the computer is asleep it Kernel Panics and reboots itself. I made a Time Machine backup, wiped the hard drive and installed 10.8.0 (Not 10.8.2) and put everything back on the computer. After doing that, the kernel panics went away, and I never had a problem. Today, a game I wanted to play required me to update to 10.8.2 to use it properly with Game Center. I updated thinking that the issue would not happen, but it did. The game works, but the kernel panics are happening again just like before. This only happens with 10.8.2, not any other version, not 10.8.1 or 10.8.0 or Snow Leopard or Lion. I sent a bug report to Apple, and they said it was a duplicate, which I assume means they are aware of the issue. I have posted this before, and people told me it is a problem with the software I have installed and the accessories. It is not. The same software and accesories works fine on every other version of OSX, just not 10.8.2. I am about to blow a gasket over here trying to fix this. I do not think I can hold out until 10.8.3, assuming that they fix this problem in the update. Many other people have posted about this problem. I added the panic report below. Note that the part in bold is the part that I notice is the same in everyone's panic report who posts about this issue. I need to fix this. SOS

What happens if you boot into Safe Mode and operate? If it doesn't panic then I suggest you uninstall the software resposible for these extensions:

com.paragon-software.filesystems.ntfs 82

com.parallels.kext.prl_vnic 7.0 15107.796624

com.parallels.kext.prl_netbridge 7.0 15107.796624

com.parallels.kext.prl_hid_hook 7.0 15107.796624

com.parallels.kext.prl_hypervisor 7.0 15107.796624

com.parallels.kext.prl_usb_connect 7.0 15107.796624

com.quark.driver.Tether64 1.1.0d3

net.telestream.driver.TelestreamAudio 1.0.5

com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower 1.5.3

Parallels needs to be upgraded to version 8. Paragon's NTFS software is now version 10 (and not really needed if you use Parallels.) Quark item I am not familiar with. The Telestream driver I seem to remember is installed by Flip4Mac which is now at version 3.

Some or all of your third-party software is likely not compatible with Mountain Lion.

Nov 23, 2012 3:07 PM in response to Kappy

So I need to spend $80 on software upgrades so my Mac won't crash after doing an update? This does not happen on 10.8.1 with the same software, but it does on 10.8.2? Everyone else's panic report for the same issue has com.apple.AMDRadeonAccelerator

there is no way everyone else has the same software installed as me. That cannot be the issue. I'm sorry for being sort of an @#$ but I have been trying to fix this for 3 months now.

Nov 23, 2012 3:14 PM in response to Mr. Petrovic

Not everyone else who reports a similar problem has the same computer as yours nor the same third-party software installed, so your comparison is problematic at this point. Not everyone has a Radeon extension involved because their models us Nvidia GPUs. Now, this doesn't mean the problem is not GPU related but for now there's no evidence of exactly what the problem is let alone if it's the same for everyone reporting kernel panics.

Just because you've been at it for three months doesn't mean you've done it right. So, you can argue with me or you can start by booting into safe mode.

Nov 23, 2012 4:37 PM in response to Mr. Petrovic

You were given an answer, which you rejected. Here's another one. Back up all data, then uninstall Parallels, Paragon, the Quark driver, the Telestream driver, and Soundflower (any one which alone might be capable of causing panics, to say nothing of all of them together) and test with a clean system. See whether there's an improvement. The answer you'd get from Apple Support is to erase your boot volume and reinstall OS X, then test without restoring any of your data or applications.

Nov 24, 2012 6:21 AM in response to Linc Davis

Ok I did what you said. With a Safe Boot, the Panics did not happen, but with a regular boot and all of those things uninstalled, it still happened. Also, if the bug report for this was closed as a duplicate, doesn't that mean it is a known issue that is independant of my machine and is happening to a lot of people? Here is the log:

That panic was caused either by a hardware fault or a bug in OS X. To make sure that it wasn't caused by a peripheral, reproduce the panic with all wired devices disconnected.

Then make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days.

Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

I have already had the computer into an Apple Store for this. The diagnostic tests all came back fine, and the panics did not happen while they had the machine, even though they tried to recreate them. After looking in /System/Library/Extensions I noticed that the IOGraphicsFamily.kext, the thing that is everywhere in each panic report, was last modified yesterday at the time I did the update, and the version is 2.3.5. I used my backup to replace this with the previous version, 2.3.4. but made a backup of 2.3.5. and rebooted the system. Maybe this is a solution temporarily?

UPDATE: Doing that did not do anything, and the crash still happened. I put the new (2.3.5) .kext back and rebooted the system. I put the machine to sleep and came back later. I wiggled the mouse, expecting to see a message saying that the computer was restarted because of a problem, but instead I saw this:

There were also tiny red and green dots mixed in there. I could wiggle the mouse and it would move on the screen though, so it was not completely frozen. I rebooted the machine and now it is running fine and the screen is fine, so the graphics card is not blown up. I looked in the console, and there was no panic log, but there was this: (I pasted it somewhere else so the page is not 90 feet long)

Apple Support told me that before and I brought it to the store only to have them find nothing wrong with it. I brought it home, and it happened again. Running 10.8.0, it is fine with no problems at all. I just ran the Apple Hardware Test and it found nothing wrong as well. However, the computer now gets stuck at the boot screen and will not boot completely. There is definitely something wrong though.
