Why is music ripped from CD's missing from my library?

I have seen this in other forum posts and I hear this from many of my friends: tracks ripped from CD's eventually go missing. Entire albums and entire artists. This is not unusual to me nor is it unique.

Granted, I hear tons of complaints about how bad iTunes is at managing a library to begin with (Why can't I sort by missing tracks?, and what on earth is "Display Duplicates" for other than to prove my point?).

How do I get iTunes to stop deleting imported music from CD's? Afterall, I OWN the music. Does Apple think I don't?

Very disappointed in this product overall.

Thanks again TT, you far exceed the Turing test. Sorry to bother again, but perhaps you or someone else on this forum can help with another issue that arises when some of us port our content to new devices. Situation: family of 4 sharing one Apple ID for iTunes purchases for many years, accumulating lots of music of all kinds. Dad finally says I don't need all of youngest son's rap on my iPhone and wants to delete it from his iTunes library. When he starts to make his move, he gets a warning that the music will also be deleted from all devices that have it, so he stops. How to solve this puzzle -- delete unwanted music from one user's iTunes library and allow other family members on the same Apple ID to continue to access it. I asked at the Apple store today, and the Apple employee I asked didn't know how to do it. The Apple documentation I have read doesn't offer a clear solution. It seems like Family Share + iTunes Match should be able to handle this request, but I can't find a documented solution.

You cannot move existing purchases from one Apple ID to another. If you have multiple devices logged into the same iTunes Match account then actions you take in one copy of that library are replicated in the others. Family sharing may help, at least for future purchases, as it can allow you to give access to the existing purchase history while letting your kids establish their own Apple IDs, however what you probably need more than that are independent libraries that are not signed into iCloud Music Library on your account. That way your son can have a library that includes his rap tracks, which is independently backed up. You can then delete those tracks from your library, hiding any that were purchased from the iTunes Store, without affecting his library.
