Reading through this I wonder if you might want to try Aperture with one of the plugins for Zenfolio.

http://www.zenfolio.com/

They have a pretty seamless workflow between iDevices also it allows you to maintain key wording and captions as well as some level of mirroring your current Library structure. It is by no means a replacement, it just gives you pretty seamless access to your photographs.

Nice Ad - but this has NOTHING to do with the question - it may be a good marketing site for photo prefessionsal (and may not be) and it may be a good place to store your photos(and may not be) but it certainly IS NOT a place to have your iPhoto library "in the cloud"

Terence and LarryHN

Just trying to offer an alternitive workflow.

I think the both of you already correctly stated that having a Library in the Cloud is not a functional solution

With that being agreed upon what options are available for the original poster (jamesfromolga).

If there primary desire is to just have access to a photo collection for viewing and sharing then my suggestion might be suffecnt.

We offer up ideas in hope of giving someone an oppituneity to reevaluate the original problem, is it a solution, the solution?

Maybe not!

But, it is a diffrent way to look at what is trying to be done.

Both of you have far more experience at this then I judging by your number of points, if I have just been adding static I apologize.

Not at all. I added my comment for the benefit of people searching in the future. We have people of very varied experience searching here and it would not be entirely unusual to find someone posting along the lines of "I saw this thread and uploaded my iPhoto Library to the Cloud, now I can't find my Events or Albums". So, my comment was to clarify that what you suggested was different from the original query, that's all.

Thank you Terence

Yes there is no telling what people might try!

Having taught Photography for many years having people getting a grasp on what "Workflow" means and how to implement it is sometimes a difficult task, especially as it is always a moving target in this Digital age.

The original posters assumption that everything is moving to the Cloud is a case in point, yes premature for now but, one day it is not unimaginable.

And in that day ones Workflow will have to again change to accommodate this new landscape.

Sorry I was referring to the comment I made above about wanting a macbook air pad with large cloud drive space and lots of ram. Google just came out with that exact thing except it needs a bit more ram. I suspect apple might do the same. At least by the time I need to upgrade again. Google scooped em. It was a gimmie from Apple. Apple has all the parts they just didn't put them all together.

This is the Chrome thing they released yesterday? Well, we'll see what the reviews say about it but remember it still does not solve the network issue - in other words the speed problem, which is the real issue. And while we know OS X is out there at about 10 -> 15% of the market, what's Chrome at now? .15%? So, you get a limited OS*, limited by the Network to glacial speed and the support of a community way smaller than Linux. Should be fun. Enjoy.

*Oh, and be sure to see what you're information about yourself that you'll be giving to Google when you use it...

I just bought a new macbook air about 6 mos ago so not upgrading for awhile. Its just cool to see this stuff happening and it brings me back to my original question of where to keep my photos safe. Google+ or Google's sky drive doesn't seem to have that ability. Lots of people have bought space in Google's cloud drive and been disappointed. I've found that Phanfare works well and I can see the photos. And the speed on my ipad isn't too bad. I'm presently using my mac air and ipad in combination to use my info stored in the cloud. It would be nice to have only one devise.

...And streaming videos while driving down the freeway is fast enough for me.
