Is there a way to get full hard drive encryption for the iPad?
This is a requirement before I start a new job and Is urgent as I really don't want to have to purchase a laptop instead of using my iPad.

iPad doesn't have a hard drive it uses flash memory. iOS devices already support hardware encryption of data:
