Apple store could not have 'sold' you 10.6.4 It is a free download and a Combo update.

What system are you currently running? Go to Apple Logo > about this Mac > and tell us the version number (immediately under MAC OS.X) and we can then guide you to obtain the right system. Also tell us the processor details (2 lines below the version number.)

Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'

OS 10.6 Snow Leopard is once again available from the Apple Store:

To summarize:

1. You can buy Snow Leopard on 10.6 DVD in either 10.6 or 10.6.3 retail, making sure everything you want to use is Snow Leopard compatible:

https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455

Updating to 10.6.6 or later with your 10.6 will allow you to use the Mac App Store to buy 10.7 upon asking the online store to allow you to purchase it. You'll need to verify everything you have is 10.7 compatible first:

https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2465

2. You can buy Lion 10.7 on USB Flash drive, and install 10.7 on a second internal hard drive that has no operating system. The Flash drive is no longer available from the Apple Store though may be found at numerous sources. Again you should make sure everything you have is compatible first:

https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2465

3. You can't buy Mountain Lion for your machine.

Whatever you do, you must backup any critical data you own before installing anything new, and observe any license agreements since you say the machine is going to someone else.
