Mac mini boot problem

My Mac mini didn't wake from sleep, frozen so I turned the unit off, left it for a time then switched it back on again. Got the white apple screen with the rotating symbol. After a few moments this stops rotating and the screen freezes. What will fix it.

Mac mini, iOS 6.0.1

Hey Neil:

lets see if you can boot into safe mode, power down the machine and hold the shift key while powering the MacMini up. If you can boot into safe mode navigate to console app found under Applications/Utilities/Console and post your report found under system.log and post only todays date. If this also fails let's do a hardware test. click here for the instructions

Hi John, tried to follow your instruction but I feel I don't have the confidence to continue. I booked an appointment with the local Apple shop and had the guy at the Genius Bar check it over. He did the checks you recommend and memory and hardware looked Ok. He did find some permissions incorrectly set, he thought these were stopping the boot. These permissions seemed mainly to be printer operating programmes that are pre loaded in the OS for plug and play service.

These were automatically corrected and the mac rebooted without further work. This took about 30 minutes and there was no charge so all's well that ends well.

Thank you so much for your assistance

Neil

Neil, I was having the same issue as the original poster of this article so I performed the single user mode boot (cmd-s) but before it finishes the report the mini automatically restarts and shows the white screen with apple logo......help!!?? Also noting one of the hard disk drives(the one with the Mac hd disk, not storage) showed failing S.M.A.R.T. STATUS PRIOR
