I have seen many posts/questions about this issue--but most of the "answers" i found for this problem were given in July 2012 which may be dated and are not working for me now.

According to Apple support, these are the steps to fix this problem:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3970?viewlocale=en_US

None of the resolutions have worked:

1. I'm not using a third-party firewall, just the Apple firewall and it's turned off.

2. I've checked my /private/etc/hosts file and there are no entries containing apple.com or verisign.com--only the default entries are listed.

3. I automatically set my date and time and have always had that feature checked.

4. I have one Apple ID associated with my email address and have confirmed that my Apple ID is verified.

Another discussion from someone who also couldn't fix it from the above resolutions suggested deleting/trashing info.plist file from apps folder. I don't have such a file in my apps folder.

Any other suggestions or help?!?! I've been using Facetime often on my Mac and it was working fine until about a week ago.

FYI for anyone with similar circumstances: My logic board was recently replaced due to a faulty video card. After reading posts on this forum, I tried various fixes unsuccessfully and then checked the serial number on the system and the computer doesn't show it. I was told by Apple Support that there is no DYI fix and that I need to take my laptop back into my local Genius Bar so the logic board can be "serialized" and that is it a fairly simple and quick process.

OK, I've been having trouble signing in, as noted by many people above (& below). I tried checking the box under "Set time zone automatically using current location" and I was able to finally log in.

Now the question here is: I've been using facetime up to about 2 hours ago, from several international locations just fine - why would it suddenly start getting all wobbly?

The only thing I changed was to try adding another email address to my profile. That was when facetime started getting "petulant". This might have been the source of all the trouble.

Beautiful, thank you for your response. By simply changing my "date and time" options to automatically search for my time zone, iMessage ended up working. The only thing that didn't work out was that the time was wrong. All I had to do was simply manually changed the time back to what the proper time was. The only reason why iMessage wouldn't let me connect was the fact that the "find my timezone automatically" button was not checked.

Thanks again!

An excellent piece of information. My logic board was also changed...and since...Facetime don't work. Looked in the 'about this mac' info and no serial number present. To be honest it puts the proverbial icing on the cake. When Apple changed my logic board they did just that, and NOTHING ELSE. My date was set to 2005...so couldn't access internet until i had worked that out...spent ages stressing about why my laptop was worse than when i took it in for repair (for a loose headphone socket!!)...everything on my mac was reset...no-one at the Applestore took time to talk to me properly about the issues i might face with a new board. Nice of them to fit a £400 logic board for free in order to fix a 50p headphone socket, but the hours of wondering why my laptop doesn't work as it should have made up for that convenience.
