I have seen many posts/questions about this issue--but most of the "answers" i found for this problem were given in July 2012 which may be dated and are not working for me now.

According to Apple support, these are the steps to fix this problem:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3970?viewlocale=en_US

None of the resolutions have worked:

1. I'm not using a third-party firewall, just the Apple firewall and it's turned off.

2. I've checked my /private/etc/hosts file and there are no entries containing apple.com or verisign.com--only the default entries are listed.

3. I automatically set my date and time and have always had that feature checked.

4. I have one Apple ID associated with my email address and have confirmed that my Apple ID is verified.

Another discussion from someone who also couldn't fix it from the above resolutions suggested deleting/trashing info.plist file from apps folder. I don't have such a file in my apps folder.

Any other suggestions or help?!?! I've been using Facetime often on my Mac and it was working fine until about a week ago.

Same here...it was something I did not see initially when I compared my file to what toddwest24 suggested. In my case it was a missing space:

255.255.255.255broadcasthost (mine) vs.

255.255.255.255 broadcasthost

Of note, when I added the space, the rest of the text tabbed over, so maybe there was an added tab, or a line break as noted above, that wasn't showing up. In any case, once I added the space it worked for me for messages. I'm old so I don't use facetime (bitnet, anyone?) so can't comment on that.

I'm just dropping a comment here to provide my own solution to this issue. I tried most of the suggestions in this thread: restarting, firewall, checking my clock, re-formatting my hosts file. What finally worked for me was replacing my verisign root certificates. I was noticing other issues with some sites, like twitter, where I was getting a 'NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID' error from Chrome. That error indicated a problem with the certificates on my machine, which appeared to be correct.

The Chrome thread at https://productforums.google.com/forum/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=ba_notificat ion#!topicsearchin/chrome/NET$3A$3AERR_C… pointed out how to correct the issue for digicert, but not verisign. Some searching led me to the page at http://www.symantec.com/page.jsp?id=roots, which has a zipfile containing all of verisign's certs. I imported every .crt and .pem contained in the master zip file (http://www.symantec.com/content/en/us/enterprise/verisign/roots/roots.zip), then quit and restarted chrome, which fixed my problem. Turning my attention back to solving my iMessage problem, I noticed that a rendering/SSL issue with discussions.apple.com had suddenly cleared up! Excitedly, I restarted Messages.app and tried to re-authenticate to iMessage -- Success!!

If you're having any similar issues with SSL-enabled sites, it might be worth your while to delete/re-import your verisign certs to see if it solves your issue with Messages.app.

Cheers,

Kevin
