Hotmail smtp.live.com server will not connect

Since yesterday Mail on my iMac will not connect with the Hotmail smtp.live.com server for sending e-mail. Whenever I try and send I get amessage saying the server is offline. I've made no changes to the machine which is running 10.8.2. I've tried deleting and recreating the account -- no joy. I've tried different port settings and SSL is selected I've tried setting up the account on another Mac, still no luck. But setting up Hotmail in Microsoft Entourage works fine. Google mail and Yahoo mail also work fine in Apple Mail.

Can anybody help? Thanks.

Hi,

Im having the exact same problem, email has worked fine since 2008 and on friday it stopped allowing me to send email. I have no problem recieving, or sending from my iphone over the same newtwork my mac is using.

The smtp.live.com server is showing as offline, having tried changing ports, deleting and reinstalling my account.

I no longer have tech support from apple, and have reached the point I no longer have any idea what to try in order to resolve this issue.

Im based in the UK, using snow leopard on a 2008 machine and my service is provided through BT infinity.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Phil

Likewise Untzy, did you do anything else? No change for me either. It is clearly something to do with the 'physical' connection into the Home Hub as why would BT fon work otherwise! Still get this error in connection doctor

Ok finally I seem to have cracked it by using BT's outgoing mail server rather than my email providers (in this case hotmail). Utilise this server mail.btinternet.com, it requires authentification so you need to have your bt account and password when setting up this smtp server. Access preferences in mail, select the smtp server list in advanced and add a new server. Make sure you are using this one when you send. The first time it will take a while. You also need to authenticate your email addresses with bt from within the account above if you've never done so. Whole process is described here http://www.pdoc.co.uk/btbroadband.shtml

Perhaps, but Mail works fine with other e-mail providers. I also have BT/Yahoo mail, and Google mail, and both send and receive via Apple Mail with no problem (but they do use IMAP servers, perhaps that's a clue?) . In any event, 'go figure', as our American cousins say!

You are aware that Hotmail and Live.com are transitioning to a new system, your Hotmail/Live address will be replaced with an @outlook.com address (mine already has). During server transitions the service tends to be erratic, but the Outlook servers seem to be fine. Go to www.outlook.com amd login using your Hotmail/Live credentials.

I switched to BT Infinity last Friday and have been struggling with hotmail on Mail ever since.

Finally I found this thread and decided to change the outgoing STMP server to mail.btinternet.com as suggested by sjallam2012. But that was not enough and although I now had green lights with the connection doctor the outgoing mail was still blocked. What I needed to do was to login to my new btinernet mail account and add hotmail as a second account. I then received an email asking for verification and finally the problem was cleared. Not very happy with the lackof information from BT.

EUREKA!!

I have a Mac Book Pro and recently had my home broadband upgraded to BT Infinity. Prior to this upgrade sending emails via my Mac mail was working perfectly. Since the new installation I could no send any external emails using the Hotmail.co.uk or 123-Reg.co.uk smtp outgoing servers. Googlemail.com was ok.? very strange.

So when I connected the same macbook to other wireless connections it would work perfectly.???

So after many hours wasted messing around, I managed to get the right person at the right time via BT helpline in the UK not India. (India helpine just say "we are not trained in Apple".

So the very polite man from UK Helpline provided me with the solution.

GO TO > Apple Icon top left > System Preferences > Network > Wireless >

Select your wireless connection > Click Advanced lower right on popup

Select DNS tab

Click on the + under DNS left pane and type the following :- 208.67.222.222

Click Apply

BINGO!!!!

I hope this helps someone, as I know how painful these types of issues can be.

Cheers
