I can now connect via IPhone Hotspot but as soon as I connect to the home WiFi, despite all the icons ie: YouTube etc still showing, nothing works.

The network shows as connected with full signal strength etc but zip!

What a mystery? Obviously the phone acts as a router to the internet but for some reason our home wifi does not work. We are running two IPhones, a MacBook Air and an Ipad 2 all successfully currently on that network but sadly not ATV! It all used to work seamlessly.

I may have just been lucky - but in case it helps someone else like me who doesn't have an additional hotspot - I would only add that I simply signed out of home sharing (with the ATV unplugged) and then turned it back on, and resigned in with my Apple ID on my computer. And then the Apple TV worked immediately after I plugged it back in. It may have been a happy accident, but it's certainly an easy enough thing to try when confronted with this frustrating problem!

Are you talking about the apple remote? If so, asuming you have an iphone, ipod, or ipad, and WiFi you can use the Remote app to control your Apple TV (https://itunes.apple.com/app/remote/id284417350?mt=8). It's a free download.

There is an article about Controlling your Apple TV with a third-party remote control (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3296). However, I have not tried it since I always use the iphone/Remote app option.

You can buy the remote seperately as well for $20 (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC377LL/A/apple-remote).
