my sound icon has been grey the past 3 days and whenever i push the volume buttons nothing happens. the normal volume thing pops up but there is a circle with a slash through it under the "speaker" icon.
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Also check the audio output port. If there is a red light showing, there is a stuck switch. Insert a headphone plug a few times and try to wiggle it. If no success, try jiggling a tooth pick inside it. If still no success, Apple store genius bar.
