Where is iTunes DJ in iTunes 11?

Andrew, I use DJ very much in the same way you do. Up Next does can not take it's place, no matter what anyone says.

I use DJ like you, to just randomly play through my entire library, and that all I use unless listening to something specific. Up Next is a whole different animal, and suggestions such as just creating a smart list using star ratings, or played in last six months, just don't cut it.

It doesn't look like Apple is going to respond to the numerous requests filed by people in this thread. And like you, I don't know how much longer I'll be able to run 10.7. This and other things is a big turn off for me to the Apple ecosystem.

What's stopping you from just randomly playing through yoru entire library this with iTunes 11?

You don't need iTunesDJ to do this.

The main difference for me would seem that when you shuffle a playlist on 'Next' it works its way through all the songs on the playlist, then ends..

On iTunes DJ I'm using a smart playlist built up from loads of different other smart playlists that includes songs that haven't been played in a while, random 5 star songs, a random selection of singles, plus a selection of my current favourite singles and albums.. That playlist keeps refreshing itself all the time, so Itunes DJ just keeps playing and playing, also not shying away from repeating the 'current favourite' tracks that I have basically A-listed.

On Next, they only get played once one every playthrough of the playlist.

I'm fascinated to see that this debate is still raging and it says, for me, something about how popular and useful the DJ feature was/is.

I am so pleased to have been able to "downgrade," to 10.7 as I have my beloved DJ back.

It's a function, I don't want to do without as I use it to provide random suggestions for playlists I create myself, for playing in the car, or when out and about, or when out gigging, to play between sets..

DJ is perfect for my needs, so far as the above goes and nothing I've seen in this forum in the way of work arounds, comes close..

However, I've heard the the new 11.1 version has a feature called "Genius Shuffle," which is reported to be a solution to the issue..

"Those unhappy at the loss of iTune DJ will be glad to hear a new Genius Shuffle option has been added to version 11.1 effectively replacing its functionality."

Mmmmmm, I'm tempted, but I have two reservations:

1. It was quite a chore going back to 10,7.
2. If this is a variation on the Genius function of choosing a song and then coming up with suggestions related to a particular song choice, then I can't see that it in any replaces DJ, which, as I have it set up is totally random and, as others have stated, throws up random playlists often providing songs which I haven't heard, or even thought of in ages, which is wonderful.

Has anyone tried 11.1 and has any advice on whether this really is the solution we've all been asking for?

If so, I'd be very greatful to hear views on it..

Apple, of course, inspite of my asking them, not to remind me about updates, is continuing to do so, but I've steadfastly refused ;O)

I had to install 11.1 since Apple doesn't support iOS 7 through iTunes 10.7. I tried "Genius Shuffle". It's in no way iTunes DJ. It seems to randomly pick a song then create a Genius playlist. You can reshuffle, but it just picks a different seed song and makes a new playlist from that. It's not random like DJ. So far, I can just pick any song in my library and select shuffle. That seems to give me a nice random playlist and I can use Up Yours to delete anything coming up I don't like.

I don't think Apple will give us back the features of 10.7 with multiple windows. They seem to want a Mac to be just a larger iOS device. I'm bummed.

I will be leaving the Apple ecosystem slowly. They used to be the anti-Microsoft. Now they are the 800 lb gorilla in the room trying to dominate everything. Sigh.

I operate a Windows P.C. so, I'm not sure whether some of the issues faced by those running Apple will ever be an issue for me, though I'm thinking of going for Windows 8 sometime soon.

I love my iPod(s) and can't imagine a world without them.

I also love iTunes, but without the DJ feature, I could do without the latter..

I've been tempted by iPhones, but I don't like the texting set up, as opposed to the Swiftkey option which is available on Android and, so far as I know, Apple don't allow "alternatives," to be used on its equipment..

In the end, maybe, it'll end up going the way of Blackberry?

A few months ago, I spent a huge amount of time reverting from iTunes 11 to 10.7, as iTunes DJ was so useful. I've really enjoyed having it back, and it was worth the many hours that the switch took.

Now it's decision time: upgrade to 11.1 so I can upgrade my iPhone and iPad to IOS 7 (which means losing iTunes DJ); or stick with iTunes 10.7 so I can continue to use iTunes DJ.

I'll stick with iTunes 10.7 and forego IOS 7. iTunes DJ is such a great feature. Nothing comes close to replacing it. I think all of us in this discussion agree on that.

At some point, I'll have to give up iTunes DJ. But not yet.

Fortunately, I'm using Windows, so maybe I'll be able to hang on to 10.7 even if I change my P.C. which I'm thinking of doing..

Or maybe we're all on borrowed time and Apple will find a way of ensuring that we all have to "upgrade" 😉

What I ended up doing is making a sperate boot partition for itunes 11 and ios7. Not the most convenient, but working for now.
