Where is iTunes DJ in iTunes 11?

Could anyone tell me why they removed it? I can't think of a reason that makes sense...

Up Next is more colorful, more flashy, more gaudy. Form over function. Why did they change the Apple TV menu? A former Apple engineer trashed the updated menu and said that Jobs had specifically rejected it. Nevertheless, here it remains.

The only reason I would think is that since they rewrote iTunes, they might just not add it yet... They were pretty late and they pushback the release date... So, they hopefully might just add it back in the next update.

In any case, it's not really professional and Apple is kind of loosing its way with mistakes like that, the maps, etc...

me too. Every single day. iTunes DJ and my Airplay home audio setup are literally my favorite possession. I dazzled friends with the remote app voting feature at parties. Please oh please bring this function back.

Thank you for posting this, Brandon. And thank you, Apple, for the joy you've brought my family and friends with iTunes DJ. I'm not going to get all aggro but I'll be on the edge of my seat, fingers crossed, for the return of party voting.

I use iTunes DJ at my parties where the guests (over 30 of them) would vote throughout the night on music to play.... awful.

I also miss iTunes DJ. And I can't see, why they not just extended it with 'Up next', which is nice, but no full replacement. The new feature could have just been integrated in the existing iTunes DJ.

The whole menu behind the small grey arrow is completely reduntand, all this (and more) waspossible before with the right-click context menu—and partly still is.

I hoped, that the delay for iTunes 11 will bring us something usefull, but not this half-baken overhaul. After firing Forstall—reportedly—over Maps, they now should fire the whole iTunes team for the crippled version.

unfortunately smart playlist + random play + Up Next is not same as iTunes DJ.

iTunes DJ was not a smart playlist, it's a dynamically generated playlist that can use other playlists as the source. Sure you could just go to your music library and shuffle it to play random songs but that's not same as iTunes DJ.

The biggest difference for me is that iTunes DJ will maintain current list of songs even if you make any changes to the songs. For example, let's say I have a smart playlist that contains all the songs rated 4 star or higher and while listening to the playlist, I decided I don't like the song anymore and want to lower the rating down to 3 stars, which would remove it from the smart playlist. When I was using iTunes DJ, I can change the rating, or any other attribute, and the song will remain playing. If I'm just listening to the playlist, iTunes will stop playing music. It won't move on to the next song, and if you hit play, it will play another random song.

Up Next is a nice addition but it's not a replacement for iTunes DJ. iTunes DJ + smart playlist was a beautiful thing for me.... I'm guessing there weren't that many people who used it like that .. but still this is a big loss for me.

I went back to version 10. No iTunes DJ and not being able to open up playlists in a new window were deal breakers for me. I copy songs from one window to another all the time. That is how I make playlists based on old mix tapes. I can have a numbe open at the same time and even decide which songs to include where. As for the Up Next, all I can say is it is cute, but not very useful. Again, I would create long lists, 200+, in DJ and then edit them on the fly as needed.

Here is q quick fix using a smart playlist

I have figured a quick and dirty fix.

I made a new smart playlist, I named mine ****myDJ so it is at the top of the list of playlists.

I then made three rules:

rule 1

SIZE is greater than 0

rule2

LAST PLAYED is not in the last 1 DAY

rule 3

PLAYLIST is Music or any of the other playlists that I already have set up.

√ Limit to 25 items selected by random

match only checked items

√ live updating

To get iTunes DJ back,

1.) Go to Playlists

2.) At the bottom left hand corner click the + symbol and click New Smart Playlist...

3.) Uncheck "Match the follwoing rule:"

4.) Check "Limit to 25 items selected by random "

5.) Change the 25 to a number you know that is greater than the number of songs you have in your library.
example: If you have 5,208 songs in your library, change the number to 10,000.

6.) Click OK

7.) Rename the new playlist (DJ, MIX ALL, iTunes DJ, etc.) Whatever fits you best.

I, too, am very much missing DJ (which I used nearly every day) for all the reasons listed by those in this thread. I appreciate the the workarounds folks have come up with but those just aren't cutting it for me.

Booooooo Apple. iTunes dj was the only way I used iTunes since they added it.

Why not just skin iTunes to look like a juke box with the bubbling tubes and everything? It'll be cool and fit in better with iCal.

This further reinforces what a good idea my Hackintosh was and how right I am in planning my escape from the walled garden that is apple. They have no idea what made Macs great for so long. (HINT: it wasn't iOS type "features")

Possibly because as I've mentioned here and in another post - my iTunes play count (on my computer's iTunes) isn't up-dating since installing iTunes 11.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it - still valid.
