What a Bummer!

I'm having this problem, too.
And as I mentioned in a different discussion, I'm having a difficult time believing that this is a mere software bug.
There's got to be some sort of conflct happening here. I mean, there's no way that Apple would have released the program like this, with broken playcount and last-played data. Right?
Right!?
This situation is so ANNOYING!
I've wasted so much time trying to figure out play counts and album artwork and it's driving me insane.
I've tried everything but just realized that after about 2-3 days, my play count updates. I have never figured out what the glitch is but it will update eventually. Apple, you may want to fix this before you start losing loyalty. It starts with something small like this, then eventually you find yourselves behind the power curve. Ask Microsoft.
I was having this problem on my work laptop (which is a windows 7 machine, so this may not be entirely applicable but this seemed to be the most thorough discussion on the topic). My play count and last played were not updating; also the play progress bar wasn't working. It would update last played and play count from my iPhone sync though, just not locally.
I saved my library files, and then deleted every apple related folder, uninstalled and reinstalled (multiple times). However, I kept having the same problem. Then I went and did the step by step uninstall, which included uninstalling Bonjour (I wasn't uninstalling that in my first several uninstall/reinstall iterations). Reinstalled iTunes one final time, copied my library folders back over and it's working like a charm again.
I hope that helps for some of you all that weren't having the crossfade issue.
Having this issue still with iOS 7.1.1 and iTunes 11.1.5.5 - newest version of it all.
Have tried all the fixes and nothing works - but then again, they shouldn't since none have any relationship to plays. The best I can guess is that with iTunes Match, Apple doesn't care anymore about the normal use of their Music App and just lets garbage code gather and break it down.
And given how ZERO Apple discussion monitors have commented on this or like issues, this seems a reasonable assumption.
This has been a part of iTunes as long as I've had my iPod (over 7 years now). I can't imagine why this hasn't been solved. It's not even a repeatable thing, it happens frequently sometimes, sometimes I go weeks without having to manually update my podcasts, which is frustrating.
Every time I see it sit on "Verifying iPod" for over a second or so, I know nothing synced and I want to punch my monitor.
I found a solution for this problem for the times when I've encountered it: disable the "Sync playback information across devices" setting.
This setting can be found in iTunes > Preferences > Store pane.
I use crossfade so for me it was a simple fix; disable the crossfade.

On iTunes 11.4 for Mac (and iOS, if that matters) ...
I have this problem on a few particularly short tracks (under 20 seconds), but I have it consistently on one entire album of normally long songs which I imported from CD years ago. Thinking that was the problem, I reimported them, but the problem persists. I play the songs, about a second before the end, it advances to the next song and the last played never updates unless I employ a script to force that.
Advice anyone?
And, no, crossfade is not on. Hasn't been for ages. Even checked the Options pane to see if something odd was there, but that's as expected as well.
I had this problem due to iTunes match, which was not allowing the play count to be updated and some times it would revert back to play count couple of days or weeks back. I used drugs scripts to update the play count in iTunes and reset iTunes match by holding the option key and turning off itunes match and then turning iTunes match back on by holding the option key. After this the play counts would be retained.
Its a bug as it keeps recurring and have to do this a regularly.
For me didnt work the crossfade deactivation. So please Apple, fix it, playcounts is one of the few reasons I dont give up I tunes.
