Ok, I "only" had to wait for about 40 minutes. My iTunes 11 is now responding again. Apple has billions of cash, but is unable to hire good software engineers. A software that doesn't let you know whait it is doing in the background is cr*p!

My suggestion to all: give it some time (1 hour?). Do not kill the process, just keep it running. Your iTunes should come back to live after some time!

That's kind of what I expected. Is anyone else having trouble with similar setups? I would really be interested in seeing whether or not an external hard drive presents the same issues.

@mstone333: Did you move your library and have any success? That fixed my problem for now.

I have my media library as well on the network (NAS). I noticed during the freeze that at one time there was a lot of network trafic going on, all regarding the "art work" which is stored under Musik\iTunes\Album Artwork\... Maybe a one time update on the covers? I hope it will not happen again!

same here

iTunes 11 with Mac OSX 10.7.5

no matter what I do, after a while I have iTunes open, I got a freeze, even if iTunes s on background

if I try to download apps or podcasts, freeze is sure in a matter of minutes

When frozen nothing is accessible, mouse pointer transforms in a rainbow rotating ball, I am not alowed to open any other program

WHAT I CAN DO IS JUST HARD RESETTING MY iMAC (keeping pressed the switch on the back of the iMac)

I kept waitig few days that engineers at Aplple would release a correction, but so far no news, just silence on such SERIOUS bug that does not permit to use iTunes and so to sync my iphone or ipad.

I can't believe that Apple is not telling a word about it, since iTunes for those having other iDevices is fundamental and in my eyes this bug is mining their credibility

At least I hope they let us know if theres something we can do to avoid it until they find a solution

(by the way I rebuilt library, I have moved it to another disk, I have verified my disks, everything to no avail)

I also started having problems with itunes 11 and Windows 8. You could access the store, but try and click on "see all', the program just froze. I had been having problems with the sound and video quality of movies and tv shows, for a couple of weeks. Eventually I discovered that if I opened itunes, by right clicking on the icon and choosing "run as administator", it appeared to solve the problem.

Yes. Windows 7 64-bit, latest iTunes 11.0.1.12.

iPhone does not need to be connected and my library is on a local drive.

Sometimes, iTunes will run fine for a few hours. Other times, it freezes immediately after opening. In any case, it is not usable.

Since iTunes has not been very useful on Windows for several major versions (I keep hoping and trying every time a major revision is released), I'm not holding my breath.

While I'd love to get it to work, I've written it off.

I'm having the same problem with Windows Vista and iTunes ver 11.0.1.12, I only just recently upgraded and have ran into this problem.

I was only able to get iTunes to open at all by opening iTunes in "safe mode" (http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1717). When I did that iTunes said that my iPhone software wasn't installed correctly but no other messages about the problem of freezing. Once I had gotten into iTunes in "safe mode" it still took 1h 30mins+ waiting for it to load. Once it did load (still in safe mode) all my 10k+ tracks are there.

I started iTunes this afternoon (2:00pm PST) and I'm still waiting for it to load completely. Right now I just have the left "outline" of the iTunes window. Task Manager shows the app as "Not Responding". I load other apps while iTunes is loading in the background to get on with my day.

My system:

  • Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit SP2
  • ASUSTeK Computer INC. A8N-E
  • AMD Athlon 64 4000+ (2.4GHz) (stock)
  • 4.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR (PC3200)
  • GeForce GTX 260 (896MB)

Other than uninstalling and going back a few versions is that the only fix still?

update:

from about 2:00pm to 4:00pm, that is how long it took iTunes 11.0.1.12 to open on my computer. So if you have just recently upgraded and have tried other fixes, and have reinstall 11.0.1.12 leave it alone and wait to see what happens. During this time I had the app open, iTunes is running and I minimize the window it keeps popping up infront of whatever window I opened.

HOWEVER, when I close iTunes 11.0.1.12 it does not close the program in the Task Manager. I have closed my iTunes like 30 minutes ago and I still have the entry in the Task Manager and if I try to "End Processes" iTunes comes back after about 2 miuntes.

Not sure what to do now, beside a restart to pull iTunes out of memeory.
