AirPlay over ASUS RT-N56U

I bought an Apple TV 3 today, intending to airplay stuff from the family's other Apple products; an iPad 2 and an iPhone 5. Turns out the AirPlay icon does not appear on either of the two. So obviously, they are not communicating with the Apple TV. All devices are connected on the same wireless network, via our ASUS RT-N56U router (firmware version 3.0.0.4.260). I have read online tonight about disabling the IGMP snooping, but I'm not able to find out how to do that.

So basically what I'm asking is what I can do to get this to work?

I have had problems in the past connecting to my work over VPN and also downloading/streaming contents from my Seagate NAS (uploading is no problem). I have not tried again after having updated the router firmware today. I suspect that the NAS and the AirPlay issues are related, whilst the VPN issue is something different. I have not yet tried home sharing, but I guess that too would not work.

Well, I hope someone out there can help...

I've solved it for my network. Not the best solution, but anyways.

I've had the exact same problem. Or at least similar. Loosing the airplay from time to time. When I uppgraded the asus a couple of weeks ago, my airplay speakers (Nocs NS2) got lost. They didn't show up in the airplay list even though I saw that they were connected to the wireless network. If I logged in to them and reconnected them, they appeared in the list for a while, but then, after not using them for a while, they got lost again.

So, I thought about buying a new router, but I didn't like the idea since the one I have is rather new. I e-mailed asus support (waiting for reply but i guess they don't have soulution, it was mostly to point it out to them, as everyone should).

Instead i thought, what if I use one of my airport expresses as carrier of the wireless network instead? It should be more compatible with airplay. So I connected an airport with a cable to the router and set it up as a wireless network (it can still work as an airplay unit). I named the SSID the same as the old one in the router (after turning of the wireless in the router offcourse) and used the same password so that I wouldn't have to reconnect all units.

So now, all my wireless units (ipad, iphone, computer, ATV, airport, nocs, PS3 and xbox) is connected to an airport express and the wired units (NAS, tellstick and tvix) connected directly to the router. Everything is in the same network and i can reach everything booth on wireless and wired, the airplay works flawlessly and i still have the good features of the router such as security and VPN. I guess i loose some speed on my wireless network, but since all my heavy traffic is directly on the NAS, which is connected directly to the router, it doesn't really matter for me.

I know that this isn't a solution for everyone, but it worked for me since even though I tried everything in this thread, I couldn't get my speakers to work with the asus router.

I also had AirPlay and wireless iPad (iOS) sync issues after upgrading the RT-N56U to the 3.0.0.x.x firmware many months ago. You don't need to enable IGMP snooping within the Wireless settings area to fix the problem. Make sure Multicast Routing (IGMP Proxy) is ENABLED in the Advanced Settings > LAN > IPTV area of the web-based ASUS Router configuration. This should fix your Airprint and iOS Wireless Sync issues.

Bonjour won't function properly if Multicast routing is disabled. This drove me nuts for weeks before I finally figured out the solution by flipping through the router settings and doing some research online.

Fantastic, guys!

I had the same issues. My B&W Z2 Speaker and Apple TV 3 didn't work with the latest ASUS RT-N65U router firmware normally, I had to restart my speaker over and over again to connect to AirPlay from my MacBook.

Now I've found the solvation – it is custom firmware from Padavan: https://code.google.com/p/rt-n56u/. Now everything is just fine and router works even faster. Pay attention you will loose all your settings on the router so you will have to input them again.

Sorry for my English, it is not my native language.

I can confirm that the ASUS firmware for the RT-N56U is awful for Airplay/Bonjour support. It may appear to work for some period of time, perhaps days or weeks, but reliability with Bonjour goes down the toilet eventually under their firmware. I highly recommend the custom ASUS RT-N56U firmeware. It's rock solid with Bonjour - Airprint, Airplay, etc. Before considering this upgrade, make sure you take a backup of your RT-N56U settings. Take screen shots of any port forwarding you're doing, as well as any other custom configuration settings you're using. I'll never go back to stock ASUS firmware after having been on the custom firmware (see below) for nearly 6 months now. No Bonjour/Airprint/Airplay issues whatsoever.

I forgot to write, but I got a reply from Asus support in sweden, however, this was in october. I'll translate it:

Hi Christian,
Thanks for your e-mail
Asus knows that some people have problem with airplay on some firmware. The only solution Asus do have right now is to downgrade the router to an earlier version. we do know that it's working with version 1.0.1.8t.

And you need to use this application to downgrade to the earlier version:
ASUS RT-N56U Firmware Restoration version 1.9.0.2 (you'll find it under utilities).

When a new firmware is released that works with airplay is not yet known.

When I downgraded, it worked. However. I didn't like the idea of having a router with such an old firmware and you lost feutures like VPN and stuf. So now I've bought an airport extreme instead. I know it's not for the one who likes to do every setting possible, but for me, who only want it to work and just have port forwarding as a must, it works great.

Just as an update.

The ASUS 3.x.x.x versions of their firmware (in other words, the current versions) all have problems with Bonjour. The custom ASUS firmware includes VPN and all of the other features in the latest 3.x.x.x ASUS firmware, plus many other features the stock firmware does not include. Note that the 66U and higher end ASUS router models are not plagued by Bonjour issues. You're fine using stock firmware on the higher end ASUS routers/wireless AP's. The Bonjour problems are limited to the RT-N56U on stock ASUS firmware, primarily because the firmware support on this model is lacking, and ASUS has never really admitted to Bonjour issues, even though almost any ASUS RT-N56U user has encountered the very same problems. Upgrade to the Custom ASUS firmware I linked above, you won't regret it. If you're not savvy or comfortable flashing your ASUS RT-N56U, find someone who can help out.

Yes they are. I've tried almost everything I found on the net. But problems still excist. However not with all of my "airplay" stuff. One of them: a Beoplay A8 receives full wifi signal. But several times it lost contact. Restarting it, solves the issue. (for a while).

For me, tweaking the config settings on my RT-N65U didn't help at all, but I've just upgraded to the latest 3.0.0.4.374.4561 firmware and *at the moment* it's working perfectly again. My Denon DNP 720AE has been a useless brick for a month or two (well, useless unless connected with a physical cable) so I'm delighted to be back in action.

Firmware downloads here: http://www.asus.com/Networking/RTN65U/HelpDesk_Download/ (for some reason the asking the router to update itself didn't work so I had to download and install manually).
