Just recently, a large microphone image has appeared in the middle of my Mac mini screen (see partial screen shot). It stays in front of all open windows, and while transparent, is very disruptive. What is this and how do I remove it?

Hi Shelly, seems one of your volume function keys is stuck down, or thinks it is.
Depending on KB & OS ersion, Try F10, or fn + F10
Maybe F10 thru F12.
OOPs, oh wait, that is Input sound level, open Sys Prefs Sound & see what happens there?
Well.... F11 removes it!! But, it unfortunately also makes all open windows slide off the screen, clearing my desktop. If I click on any icon in the dock to bring it back, so returns the microphone. (sigh) Also, when I open sys pref / sound - I don't see any option to remove that icon. Nor does anything I try work.

Hmmmm, see if one of your "Spaces" or Desktops has Sys Prefs or some Sound app as part of it.
I don't see any way to adjust system preferences for anything other than my main desktop. The only other "space/desktop" on this computer (which I don't use) has a calculator, calendar, weather & clock. - no sound app
I GOT IT!!! after over an hour of plugging and unplugging my dual monitors, keyboards, mouse, analyzing every system preference I could find, googling for answers, rebooting who knows how many times - I unplugged and replugged my apogee one from the Mac mini and it's GONE. thanks for all your help. Glad that's over 🙂
