What are your thoughts on the New iTunes 11?

I for one am not very impressed! You lose cover flow, and the ability to resize your album art. Unlike previous versions where everything is not in just one area now your searching over the whole itunes for what you need to do. Its cluttered and instead of just editing one album your stuck at looking at all the other distractions instead of what your trying to edit. What are all of your thoughts on this new itunes?

I'm not sure how to word it correctly, but "search entire library" is different than the older way to search all fields. I believe that it searches podcasts, movies, books, etc., in addition to your music library. If you uncheck the box and do not check a single field underneath that, it still searches your music library, and it goes a lot faster.

IT is precisely that nostalgic jukebox feel of the coverflow that made it so appealing - infinately more so than the unnatural (though clever) visualisers that are offered by so many apps, including iTunes. It had the advantage of showing what album was being played from, and very usefully it prevented the screensaver from kicking in when it wasn't wanted. I loved the coverflow - it was perhaps the most endearing feature of iTunes...

I am not patient enough to read through 21 pages of user comments to see if someone else has gotten an answer to the problem of the seeming inability to continuous play the entire music library randomly. No matter which of the buttons I select, this POS software will play either only ONE song or ONE album. So very sorry I upgraded. Yes, count me among the myriads who miss CoverFlow too.

Dec 3, 2012 5:43 AM in response to Porf

I think its a huge step back. Its very hard to navigate. Playlists are hard and complicated to create.

Everytime I search library I get a not responding spinning wheel. Also when I search to add songs to playlists, the same thing happens. My iTunes is now unusable because it always crashes and I have to force quit constantly.

How do I revert back to version 10?

Apple, please get your act together. We pay a hugh premium for Apple equipment and software over PC's and Windows so we expect to have problem free use for our money.

OK, david.moody, I guess that I get your point.

I still wish that people would give this a chance. After my own initial shock and awe about the hidden column browsing "feature," the method behind the madness is becoming a bit clearer.

There have always been lots of problems with iTunes, but we got used to those. Mine center around not having folders, and never knowing where my rented movies are going to show up. Never mind, this kind of reaction often happens with all new releases of Apple software, and even hardware. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt on the rest, as it has often proved to be true that climbing up the learning curve on a new piece of software or hardware can be rewarding.

Meanwhile, Apple, please note:

  1. To column browse albums, etc. requires extra steps/clicks, because you have to get out of album view, for instance, go to songs view, turn on columns view, and take it from there. Not good.

  2. When playing radio stations. the mini viewer does not show the current song.

  3. Getting in and out of mini viewer is now also a multi-step process.

Those sorts of things need to be fixed, because adding features should subtract needed user involvement, not add to it!

Reserving my final judgement, which I am sure has Apple quivering in its boots.

To Keith Johnson. Thanks, Keith, but that doesn't always work for me -- at least not on my 2011 iMac with Mountain Lion (another Apple failure IMO). I should explain that I've been using the software for as long as it has been available, so the crossed arrows icon has been something I have long been aware of. No matter whether I am in album or song mode, the most I can get to play is whatever is on THAT album; if I am in song mode, the software plays only THAT song I have selected, then stops.

My own solution has been to create a new playlist, then select my entire music library and copy it to that playlist. Rather foolish, don't you think?

Dec 3, 2012 6:51 AM in response to Porf

Mere words are completely inadequate to describe my utter loathing and disgust for the new UI. And it's not just appearance (which is OK I suppose), it's the lack of functionality I routinely use that's appalling.

So someone thought it was a good idea to just add a bunch of extra crap from your cloud to MY MUSIC COLLECTION? Think again. That's is possibly the most rude application behavior I have ever encountered. I finally found the preference to turn it off. But make no mistake about it, I AM NOT HAPPY.

So now the status bar only tells me the number of songs in my library and not the number of albums? So I have to click around to find that out?

Now the playlist and library views are different sizes. I used to be able to size things to show a precise number of albums in both views, now I can't. It looks sloppy and unorganized.

File > Show Duplicates is gone? Crikey! No No No No No No. Give it back to me!

You've gutted all the features I use to manage my library. No No No No!

BTW, one thing you could have done that would have been exceeding useful is to support more than one conversion format at a time. Having to redefine a single prevailing import format from Preferences is ludicrous. Sometimes I want to creat a wav or MP3 even though I use ALAC most of the time.

On a scale of 1 - 10, this is like a minus 99.

Use experience is too important to guess about. How about some usability testing next time? iTunes feels like dancing-bear-ware now (the remarkable thing about dancing bears is not that they dance well, it's that they dance at all).

Crikey, my day is off to a crappy start. Like I really need this kind of nonsense.

How do I revert? I can't deal this at all.

Dec 3, 2012 7:02 AM in response to david.moody

I spent HOURS and HOURS getting the cover art for all of my albums. I had a very tough time with the little indie bands that don't have their artwork on the internet. The reason for all of that hard work, I loved the cover flow view. All that time wasted. And why can't you double click the top of the page and minimize like you can with all the other software on an iMac? Oh, and just for fun, none of the links in iTunes help are working. They should have made sure the help section worked before rolling out this garbage.

Dec 3, 2012 8:16 AM in response to Porf

Bless you!

I have been looking for the 'size and time' feature that you describe!

What about the random feature? Have you found that? Not to randomize while playing but randomizing (for instance) before a burn.

I often used that feature when burning discs.

I found the previous 'search' feature more helpful than the new one, though
