What are your thoughts on the New iTunes 11?

I for one am not very impressed! You lose cover flow, and the ability to resize your album art. Unlike previous versions where everything is not in just one area now your searching over the whole itunes for what you need to do. Its cluttered and instead of just editing one album your stuck at looking at all the other distractions instead of what your trying to edit. What are all of your thoughts on this new itunes?

By any chance, do you have 37018 items in your itunes library (songs + podcasts + boos + movies + tv shows + applications)?

Sounds like something messed up and the media folder got moved/deleted/whatever and/or the database that points to it is not correct (possibly messed up from the .

I'd be panicking right about now, checking to see if the files are still there... In windows, I think the location of your media should/might/may be in desktop > My Documents > Music > iTunes > iTunes Media, but I'm not entirely sure.

Try this support article for more info on what itunes thinks of where the media might be : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1391

If the media itself is still safe and sound, looks like it might be a database that got messed up. You might be able to grab it from a backup (you may want to do a google search for instructions to restore an itunes library from a previous backup, but you will lose whatever changes you made since then).

Good luck.

(forum thing threw an error, logged me out, and hosed my final edit... then the "draft" it brought back was quite a bit older than the one i wanted to post... like the fact I wanted to include the support article..)

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.

Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.

Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

Oops, forgot this was a Mac thread... The script won't be any use but with suitable edits for Mac keyboard shortcuts the rest might help...

Yeah, I didn't mean to make it sound like folders getting nuked was the most likely case and the bit about panicking was probably a bit alarmist... It's a habit I picked up debugging computer related problems over the years... Start at the source and methodically work your way to the end... in this case... start by making sure the media is there...

Turns out I took a closer look at the support article quoted and microsoft and/or apple changed the location of the itunes library between vista and windows 7/8 (she did mention vista and windows 7), which is probably the most likely scenario in this case:

  • Windows Vista: C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes\
  • Windows 7: C:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes\
  • Windows 8: C:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes\

notice vista is "...\Music\...." and 7 & 8 are "...\My Music\...."

I keep it on my primary drive, but I do have a backup on a separate computer (and failing that, I'll suck it up and spend the next 6 months re-ripping all my CDs), so I'm not personally worried, though I would be seriously inconvenienced.

Most of the features I would want back in new versions of itunes could easily be put back in and in some cases actually bring a bit of consistency to the UI, so it's really difficult to understand why they yanked them in the first place.

They keep dumbing down these applications. Remember when you'd shuffle a playlist and it would stay that way until you deliberately shuffled it again? Or when you had some control with how the shuffle mix shuffled the songs? Now, for the life of me, I can't figure out how to shuffle a playlist and see the results of the shuffle on the screen so that I know when I'm syncing to a device, that's the playlist going to the device. It's just becoming more and more obtuse with each major revision.

My question is the same as yours. What criteria are they using for user input? They've never asked me how I use iTunes, have they asked you? Who the **** do they talk to? Stupid people?

Try this one: Click on iTunes Store, then click once in the search field in the upper right hand corner, then begin typing. What happens? Nothing except an alert sound. "Oh no sir, you must click the search field TWICE to make it work." Is that a bug or just some stupid programmer with no clue how things should work? And where were the alpha and beta testers on this one? I'm just a stupid user and found it in a second...

More stupidity. Try this one:

Show the sidebar and in the main window, display your music by Songs. Insert an audio disc into the cd/dvd player. When iTunes mounts it, eject it. iTunes ejects the disc and the main window returns to display which display mode? Albums instead of what you set it to, ie. Songs.

I could probably make a huge list of stupid iTunes 11.x behavior, but since Apple doesn't pay me to debug their stupid software, they can have at it.

Wow, that's a good "stupid iTunes trick." Did you report the bug?

I can't get your first "trick" to work -- the one about searching the iTunes Store. It works fine on my system. I don't have to click twice; it performs the search immediately, as I'm typing, and displays the results below the search.

I don't like how the library organizes albums. Sure, an artist's "greatest hits" are a "compilation", but I want it included in the artist's folder, NOT the compilation folder! And when I downgraded back to iTunes 10, I disocvered I had no iTunes Media folder! I did have my library & Music folder, but there was not one called iTunes Media. However, when I finished doing the downgrade, by re-installing 10, it then created the folder...

But my question is: I see they've released another "upgrade" 11.02, anyone seen what they changed? Have they listened to the avalanche of negative feedback? And I had to chuckle reading the FIVE STAR/SUPERLATIVE rating CNET's "expert reviewer" gave iTunes 11, followed by dozens of users rating it in the toilet.... Are they paid off, or what?

Interesting. I have to click twice. I'd like to hear what others say about that one.

EDIT: Mark, try quiting iTunes and relaunch and then try it before doing anything else. Once I've clicked twice and have not left the store, one click does work. But on first entry, it needs two clicks, for me anyway.

I used to report bugs but no more. I used to do beta testing in the 80's for a few companies. Apple doesn't pay me to report bugs, they don't even say thank you. Screw 'em.

At least he's into wearing knee pads.

I mean, even the fonts are horrible in 11. And the store fonts are smaller than ever, making it hard for aging eyes like mine to keep up with the smaller sizes. There is no way to increase the font sizes, either. Instead, we're expected to use, what, accessibility features to read these tiny fonts? A virtual magnifying glass?

Know what's wrong with the magnifying glass paradigm used in IOS? It forces you to scroll sideways (because it doesn't repaginate the text) - - the most basic rule in any page design is NEVER make your user scroll sideways, and yet, Apple has integrated it into the OS. I don't know who's making these decisions at Apple., but they can't be more stupid or wrong.

I'd have to join with those who hate the new itunes. I felt very comfortable with the old version. Now I don't know how to make a playlist or how to burn a disc. Used to be that these programs worked without any learning curve, they worked just as you expected. This version has just made burning discs and managing music no fun....

Give us the Beauty of Cover Flow back now it (Itunes 11) looks generic! One of apple's greatest Achievements is by creating a product that is aesthetically pleasing to set itself apart from the rest! So are you just going backwards now on that notion? New features are great and all but it has to look good too! Not this run of the mill lameness!

What are your thoughts on the New iTunes 11?
