iTunes 11 Import Issue

Just downloaded the new software to my 2011 MBP running Mountain Lion. When importing a new song, the track appears on my "Recently Added" playlist but will not show up in my library. It's as if the song only exists in the Recently Added playlist.

I connected my Touch and synced it. The song shows up there in the iPod's library as expected, perfectly normal. However, on my Mac, it is no where to be found except for on Recently Added.

Even when I search for the track and, more generally, the artist, I still cannot find it. All the labels are correct as I checked them against other songs on the same album that had been successfully imported prior to the software update.

I also organized the library by "date added," which would show the most recently added track at the very top - and the one in question is not there.

Essentially, I know this track exists in my library as iTunes added it to my iPod. But it seems to be invisible!

Has anyone else run into this? Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks in advance, everyone.

I'm having the same problem when adding movies. It appears that iTunes isn't updating its database. I quit iTunes and dragged the database out of the iTunes music folder and restarted iTunes. It created a new database and all my songs and movies are gone but I was able to add new movies. I don't know what this means. Maybe it needs to be rebuilt? Does anybody know how to rebuild the database?

This worked for me. I quit iTunes and moved the file called iTunes Music Library.xml from the iTunes folder to my Desktop. I restarted iTunes and it recreated the file and I was then able to add music and movies to iTunes. A couple of interesting things...the file name is now iTunes Library.xml (it dropped Music from the name) and the file size went from 629KB to 8.2 MB so something is definitely different about this file. I hope this helps.

Turning off "Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases" (in preferences not the similarly named option in the View menu) fixed this for me. Even turning it back on again the problem did not return. While I had the problem the cloud icon was showing the scanning lines and now it doesn't so somehow or other it seems to get stuck synchronizing with the cloud.

zcitron - where do I find "Show iTunes in Cloud purchases"? I've looked in preferences in both iTunes and "Cloud" in the systems preferences - yet can't find it. It is likely quite obvious - but I just can't seem to find it.

I'm having the same problems and am hoping your solution works for me as well.

Thank you in advance...

there is definitely an importing bug in itunes 11 which has led to movies I have imported not showing up in the Library.

Here's what happened:

1. I ripped an mp4 file and added to itunes - it showed up fine under the "Home Videos" tab under "Movies". (Although that in itself is annoying: it's a ripped TV show, not a personal home video, and confuses the fact since I had a pre-existing genre of "Home Movies" that were actually home movies i.e. that I shot myself. But I digress.)

2. I then ripped another mp4 and tried to add it. iTunes showed that it was importing (i.e. the "copying track" info showed, and then the actual physical file could be located in the finder in the correct location) but the track would not show in the library. Doing a text search would not show it. It simply wasnt' there.

3. I tried another mp4 file. Same thing. The only track showing in the library is the first file, but the added files are copied to the correct location. They just won't show in the library.

4. Restarting etc did not help.

5. Out of frustration, I deleted the first mp4 that I added i.e. the only one that showed in the library.

6. AS SOON AS I DELETED FROM THE ITUNES LIBRARY THE FIRST MP4 THAT I HAD ADDED, THE OTHER "INVISIBLE" ONES IMMEDIATELY APPEARED AND FUNCTIONED PROPERLY.

So there is clearly a bug here. Hope this helps somebody....

EDIT: Running OSX 10.8.2 and itunes 11.0.1 on a 2009 Mac Pro.
