Same issue here. I ended up unplugging the power after 4 hours. Now I'm having all sorts of problems with my gen 3. I reset it and it always hangs on activation. Tried doing the update again, this time it doesnt freeze but it says "The update was uncessessful". I tried manually updating via iTunes but it does not show up in iTunes 11 like it did before.

Apple, please fix this!

Same here. 2/3 rds way into prepping for upgrade it sat for an hour before i finally unplugged it. It restarted thankfully and is as before. Whats up with the upgrade? No network issues on my end. Apple you are starting to look like Microsoft. You better start making sure QA is on the ball prior to releasing this. Disgraceful. I will wait to hear of a fix before trying again.

I had this stall condition last night installing Apple TV Software Update 5.1.1. The target was my Apple TV 3rd Generation an its network connection is by Ethernet. On the second lengthy stall I grew impatient and disconnected and then reconnect the Ethernet connection. Installation resumed and completed promptly.

A more detailed descrption follows. A stall first occurred after the download phase completed an the installation moved along into Part 1 of Preparing the Update until the progress bar stalled for over 45 minutes at approximaty 60 percent. Then, without intervention, made slow progress to abount 80 percent and appeared to make no more progress. After the disconnect/reconnect Ethernet preparation compled and entered Part 2 and completed. After the automatic resart the new release booted and ran for me.

Mine has been frozen for 3 days!!!

Functioned PERFECTLY before that.

PERFECTLY.

So, today, after being directed by all suggestions here, AND articles and suggestions by Apple, I went through ALL the restore processes, including restore through iTunes/micro USB.

No dice.

APPLE UPDATE KILLED MY PERFECTLY FUNCTIONAL APPLE TV.

AND WILL NOT REPLACE IT!!!!!!!

NOT HAPPY.

AT ALL...

Like most SW companies today Apple has forsaken the added expense of SW System Designers, Usability Designers and Software Quality Auditors - I dabble in all three at a major aerospace defense corporation.

Apple is operating under the au current SW Philosophy of, "Our SW Developers can design the usability as they write and do the QA Anlaysis on the fly." Saves a lot of money and they substitute these "user forums" in place of true Quality of Design and Usability.

When I am developing defense systems I always advise my guys to, "Design for your Grandmothers, so the Experts will have no problems!"....so far our stuff is working just fine in the mud, rain, sand and tender hands of 18-year old newbies and angry old Gunny Sar'gents. A baseline example is separate "On" and "Off" buttons in green and red...or tapered-batteries for emergency radios so a blinded-pilot down behind the lines can easily install the battery correctly in the dark and radio for help.

Where is Bruce Tognazinni when we need him?
