I'm just another with the same problem going on an hour now 3/4 step 1 preparing update.
there are no replys with soulution Im not only one that didnt pay $30 for care plus with a $100 item.
another question. Does apple thec. ever look at these or could they care less? Apple has been little help to
me with many problems. But if I throw money at them I'm there best friend!!!!!!!!!!
Same issue here. I ended up unplugging the power after 4 hours. Now I'm having all sorts of problems with my gen 3. I reset it and it always hangs on activation. Tried doing the update again, this time it doesnt freeze but it says "The update was uncessessful". I tried manually updating via iTunes but it does not show up in iTunes 11 like it did before.
Apple, please fix this!
I just ran into the same issue with my 3rd gen Apple TV. Made 3/4 of the way through step 1 of the upgrade and it has been stuck for just over an hour.
Has Apple posted any kind of response to this issue?
I walked away from the upgrade process and returned 5 hours later to find the LED on the Apple TV flashing. About an hour after that the system was upgraded to 5.1.1 and fully functional. I hope that is not going to be the normal upgrade process...6 hours....
Same here. 2/3 rds way into prepping for upgrade it sat for an hour before i finally unplugged it. It restarted thankfully and is as before. Whats up with the upgrade? No network issues on my end. Apple you are starting to look like Microsoft. You better start making sure QA is on the ball prior to releasing this. Disgraceful. I will wait to hear of a fix before trying again.
You would think Apple would respond to this. I'm pretty turned off that within one year of buying a product I try to update like it asks and it freezes. Nothing I did wrong and now they want me to buy Apple Care for a $100 product that is still under warranty??? Steve Jobs where are you? Your company is going to ****.
Now got mine to update, found a non apple site saying the problem that I was having was to do with me using an Ethernet cable rather than wifi, unplugged my Ethernet cable connected to the wifi and it updated first time so there must be a bug in the update, thanks non apple forum for your help!
I discovered on this one that patience is a virtue. I almost turned mine off after a couple of hours, but did not after reading this. Two more hours and it began moving again. Finished after 5 hours.
I had this stall condition last night installing Apple TV Software Update 5.1.1. The target was my Apple TV 3rd Generation an its network connection is by Ethernet. On the second lengthy stall I grew impatient and disconnected and then reconnect the Ethernet connection. Installation resumed and completed promptly.
A more detailed descrption follows. A stall first occurred after the download phase completed an the installation moved along into Part 1 of Preparing the Update until the progress bar stalled for over 45 minutes at approximaty 60 percent. Then, without intervention, made slow progress to abount 80 percent and appeared to make no more progress. After the disconnect/reconnect Ethernet preparation compled and entered Part 2 and completed. After the automatic resart the new release booted and ran for me.
I had same problem. Unplugged all cables from Apple TV box, including power, waited a few minutes, plugged back in and it solved problem -- at about the same time I had apple support on the phone. They said totally uplugging is often the solution to that sort of problem.
I had the same problem with it freezing overnight during the upgrade. I unplugged the power and plugged it back in and went back into settings and selected to upgrade the software. It upgraded without a problem. Thank you for posting! 🙂
I had this same problem: update had dragged on overnight with no progress. After seeing these posts, I unplugged my Apple TV, waited a few seconds and then plugged it back in. It took a few minutes and then booted up exactly as expected, apparently having completed the software update as well.
Unplugged all cables incl. power ... plugged back and restart sw update. After that sw updated worked. Well, at the end it runs but high quality sw service is something different. Apple should improve quality check!
Mine has been frozen for 3 days!!!
Functioned PERFECTLY before that.
PERFECTLY.
So, today, after being directed by all suggestions here, AND articles and suggestions by Apple, I went through ALL the restore processes, including restore through iTunes/micro USB.
No dice.
APPLE UPDATE KILLED MY PERFECTLY FUNCTIONAL APPLE TV.
AND WILL NOT REPLACE IT!!!!!!!
NOT HAPPY.
AT ALL...
Like most SW companies today Apple has forsaken the added expense of SW System Designers, Usability Designers and Software Quality Auditors - I dabble in all three at a major aerospace defense corporation.
Apple is operating under the au current SW Philosophy of, "Our SW Developers can design the usability as they write and do the QA Anlaysis on the fly." Saves a lot of money and they substitute these "user forums" in place of true Quality of Design and Usability.
When I am developing defense systems I always advise my guys to, "Design for your Grandmothers, so the Experts will have no problems!"....so far our stuff is working just fine in the mud, rain, sand and tender hands of 18-year old newbies and angry old Gunny Sar'gents. A baseline example is separate "On" and "Off" buttons in green and red...or tapered-batteries for emergency radios so a blinded-pilot down behind the lines can easily install the battery correctly in the dark and radio for help.
