Hi i am at a hotel and in order to connect to the wifi and use the internet you have to click agree on a webpage but that webpage does not popup on the apple tv so how can i connect to it?
The answer is YES!
There are two main things you have to know:
1. What is the MAC address of the Apple TV that you own. Though pronounced the same as Mac, it refers to an industry standard of identinfying a specific device. It stands for Media Access Control.
2. Who is the provider that the hotel is using.
TO FIND THE MAC ADDRESS:
This can be done before you pack your Apple TV and leave your house.
1. Connect your Apple TV to the TV... turn both on... blah blah blah... Apple TV is displayed on the TV
2. Go to Settings > General > About
3. The MAC address is labeled as "Wi-Fi Address" in this situation (SEE PHOTO BELOW). It will be a set of 6 pairs of alphanumeric characters, each pair separated by a colon. For example... 00:11:22:cc:bb:aa (they'll look more random than this, but I didn't want to take a chance on posting someone's real MAC address)
4. Write down that address. This is NOT CASE SENSITIVE.
THE HOTEL'S SERVICE PROVIDER
The service provider's information will typicaly be right in the hotel room because there is no reason for hotel staff to have to troubleshoot this stuff for us.
1. Call the support number and follow their prompts to get to a support agent.
2. Say, "Hello! I have an Apple TV, and I understand I can connect to your service by registering the MAC address with your service."
3. They will ask you several questions to verify that you are staying at one of the hotels they service.
4. Follow their instructions for registering the MAC address
5. On your Apple TV, go to Settings > General > Network > Wi-Fi, and select the hotel's Wi-Fi.
6. Voila! CONNECTED and Ready to Go!!!
Thanks for bringing up that solution. It's probably an easier solution considering you don't have to call anyone for info on setup. And yes, this will also work on a PC.
There are a couple NON-crucial drawbacks, and it may affect some people:
1. It does use up resources on your laptop which is an issue ONLY if you're processing large files or downloading and uploading large files. Typing documents or surfing the web... not an issue at all (might be slower, but not necessarily).
2. If you're with family, and you want to do your work in the lobby or at a cafe while your family watches, their connection goes with you and your computer.
Other than that... your solution is much quicker!
Try this:
In regards to resource, the kids were watching Netflix via appleTv while I was watching a show on hulu on the laptop and ddin't have any lag/drag.
In regards to having to move the laptop, yeah that will be a problem as either the appletv has to be connected via network cable to the laptop or the laptop connect to the host via network cable.
Thanks! I'll have to try that. The MAC address is definitely not visible when running via wifi. I've gone through every option to find it. We have the Kinect (which shouldn't make a difference at all).
Is there a way to do this at a marina where in addition to checking a box in the browser, you have a user name and password? Unfortunately Apple TV doesn't have a browser so I can't figure this out.
Great Life's solution is what may be the easier in this situation. So, if you have a laptop, login as you would. Then share the Internet connection via your computer.
Otherwise, the other option still works the same. You just need to know who the service company is, and there are 2 ways to find that. One, ask the staff at the marina. Two, the service provider's name will be on the login page along with a way to contact them for support.
All in all, same rules apply.
This works!!!! I simply got the number of technical support on the TV channel listing sheet right in my hotel room. Went to my Apple TV and got my Apple TV Wi-Fi address. I called tech support and read the script provided above and within a few minutes... up and running!!!! I LOVE it when I get information that actually works!!!
It worked thanks!! You have made my next month in this hotel much more comfortable!!
Haha... glad this helps, Drjbenner! Sorry you have to spend a month in a hotel!!!
Hi everyone,
First, thanks for your advices, it worked well for me at some point as my Apple TV is now connected to Internet through the hotel's wifi.
Unfortunately, it is only connected to Internet and cannot connect neither to my iPad, nor to my iphone, even if the mirroring button appears on the menu of the movies or photos.
What is strange is that my iPad detects another Apple TV which is not obviously mine since I am refused to mirror my contents on it.
Moreso, as I have changed my Apple TV's name just to make sure, I surprisely discovered that I could "see" my own Apple TV on my iPad in the hotel's lobby but not in my room! (Lobby and my room are distant and distinct buildings).
The I.T. guy of the resort is on for more than 7 hours now and couldn't find where should be the problem and how to handle it.
If anyone can come up with an idea, we would be grateful.
Thanks
At a sandals resort for my honeymoon. Me and the wife are tv junkies. This worked EASILY! Thanks for the post.
That is strange, MacDav! The only thing I can think of is the following scenario:
- AppleTV was connected via Ethernet
- iPad connected via wifi
- Ethernet connection in your room is on different subnet than wifi router in room
- wifi in lobby is on same subnet as Ethernet connection
I can't think of any other scenario that would make sense... but then again, my head's too big for the size brain I have! So, there are probably a dozen other scenarios that could be the issue. :-)
Glad to hear!
Congrats on the marriage!
Wow. This is amazing information. I have to say, 5 years ago we could have never found information like this.
And now, it's readily available.
Anyone who is still imprisoned by the pc demons should cut themselves free.
Being an iApplehead is the only way to be :)
And ditto--this made the next 5 weeks way easier for me!!
Thank You!! This totally worked! WooHoo!! Thanks again!
