Is it worth it to get a battery app to help your battery last during the day or Is there a better place to go for tips.

IMO, those battery apps are useless. Just charge your battery as often and as long as possible. Try not to deep discharge it as this is hard on Lithium batteries. Apple recommends one charge cycle per month... most users get this with normal usage, i.e. 2 charges from 50%, 5 charges from 80%, etc.
If your battery meter seems incorrect, i.e. it shuts off at 10% instead of 1%, fully discharge (till it shuts off) and then full recharge (100%). This should recalibrate the meter.

Makes sense, but aren't there things that can help during the day which drains battery because I'm too stupid to shut off an app running in background or uncheck a box or something.
