Why is my keyboard purple

My ipad (4th gen) keyboard turns yellow quickly and then the qwerty keys stay purple when transitioning from landscape to portrait mode. Any idea why this happens? I can't find anywhere to turn it off. Purple glowing keys when in portrait. No idea why. It doesn't mention anything in the manual and searching the Internet does no good as all I find is ads for purple keyboards to buy.

From looking at it, it really looks like it's meant to be that way. Perhaps as the keyboard is a bit smaller in portrait it is to highlight the letter keys and make them easier to see? I'm away from civilisation at the moment otherwise I'd go to shop and have a look at another ipad to see if they're all like this (Gen 4). My first generation ipad wasn't like this and Mum's got a third gen and it doesn't do this either. Anyone else out there with a fourth gen ipad that can tell me what theirs looks like? It's not a big issue but one those things that you wonder about and will eventually drive me crazy.
