iTunes 11 airplay stops in middle of songs, why?

We have iTunes 11 on a MacBook Air with Lion (10.7.5, all current updates). Occasionally, in the middle of a song playing over Airplay, iTunes stops streaming the song. As best we can tell it appears to be random. If we go back to a song that it previously stopped on, but it doesn't stop again. Thought it may be Energy Savings settings, but it's set for 3 hours before sleeping, and 2 hours to turn off screen. Now "Put the had disk to sleep..." is set, and perhaps this is it. But according to my wife, this never happened under iTunes 10.x, it has just started with iTunes 11.

I'll try the "hard disk sleep" setting and report back, but any other ideas?

Same problem. All Apple hardware throughout home, iMac, Apple Tv2, Airport Extreme Base Station, iPad2, Airport Express. Airplay seems to play for a little bit then just gives up. Even streaming to the Apple TV is now a chore. Sincerely fed up. I remeber fondly when I went from a PC to a Mac. Everything worked, everything was fluid and responsive, incrediblely well thoughht out and well designed. It seems Apple these days are trying to too hard too fast, I hope to goodness iTunes 11 is not be another iOS Maps fiasco.

Hi,

Not sure if this is the same issue, but similar.

Some of you say that musics stops playing over AirPlay, but that the iTunes status bar still shows progress.

I also have problems with music stopping randomly, but it stops as if I have hit pause. The Apple TV music screensaver turns off and iTunes show the Play button instead of Pause. I THINK I have noticed iTunes stopping randomly in the middle of playback, but for me it almost always stop by the end of the track. We're talking 2 seconds or so left of the song. It's like it's preparing for the next song and instead of loading it just stops.

I'm playing without AirPlay now and so far it has not stopped. But using AirPlay, it has stopped after almost every track tonight.

This might be a workaround. I tried it and Airplay kept playing for over two hours before we shifted to watching the news. On my iMac, I used the Airplay symbol to select the Apple TV AND the computer speakers for playback, selecting the "Multiple" choice at the top of the |^| menu. Playback did not stop after the usual 30 or so minutes. I plan to test this for an extended period tomorrow and will report back. If this works, it's sad that my usually elegant Apple ecosystem only works through trickery. It's funny that Apple has not owned up to this problem as a possible bug.

I'm getting the same error on an iMac and a MBA who connect to my iTunes library over Airplay. The library is mounted on a Drobo connected to a Mac Mini.

Every now and then iTunes 11 just stops. Sometimes after a pause it will resume again, sometimes not. iTunes will occasionally pop up a 'Rebuffering' error box, so it looks like it's not asking the networked disk for the next chunk of data in time.

I never saw this under previous iTunes so I suspect it is a bug.

I have also tried everything to no avail. Music continues to cut out unexpectebdly over AirPlay and iTunes reports that it is "paused". Pressing play resumes the stream.

Likewise, when watching (streaming) shows to the Apple TV, it ALWAYS cuts out/drops the stream between 8-9 minutes. I honestly don't get it, maybe this will get patched with 10.8.3, which is supposed to address AirPlay issues.

Looking in console, I can only find this line, which looks very suspicious but not tremendously informative:

iTunes[1195]: 2012-12-05 08:54:05.582972 PM [AVSystemController] Stopping AirPlay

iTunes[14400]: 2012-12-05 08:54:18.616672 PM [AVSystemController] Stopping AirPlay

Anybody else found anything?

I put the sleeping setting of the harddisc of the iMac at 3 hours instead of 10 minutes, it was be for installing iTunes 11.

Till now iTunes die not stop or pause playing music. This is now appr. 2 hours and 45 minutes. After upgrading iTunes this was between 45-60 minutes, with the harddisc sleeping at 10 minutes. So perhaps this is the problem and solution, but it will necessary that Apple is coming with an solution asap.

For me, everything was working fine before upgrading to iTunes 11. Now when attempting to stream a movie from Mac miini or Imac to ATV, the movie will stop repeatedly. Mine does not seem to be tied to the sleep timer on the mac. I also tried to stream from 2012 iMac to the Mac Mini and had the same problem of the movie stoping repeatedly.

I have Plex server set up on iMAC and the Plex client on the mac mini and it still works fine.

Update on my experiment: if I use both the computer and the Apple TV as speakers, it does not stall the tunes. Using this method I played music non stop for 9 hours yesterday. It hung up finally when it reached a video in the playlist. I believe Apple has acknowledged the video streaming problem and has planned a "small update" to fix it, along with the duplicate song fix... Hopefully the music streaming is part of the same problem. The article said it would take place in .the next few weeks." Seems like a long time to wait...

Hi guys,

I went ahead and did a full re-install of OS X on my rMPB15". I.e. reformatted SSD and did NOT recover from a backup. I then transferred all my files manually and installed the apps that I wanted. I had a bunch of issues from multiple prior migrations that needed fixing, so the iTunes bug was not the only issue.

It worked for a few hours, but then suddenly playback stopped again. So I can safely assume that iTunes 11 is the culprit. Either it's a general bug with iTunes 11, or iT11 has some issues with older iTunes libraries. In my mind it has to do with gapless playback being checked for certain albums in prior versions of iTunes (that option is gone in iT11), but it might have to do with something else entirely. I am not willing to start over my iTunes collection from scratch, so I will never know.

TL;DR: It has to do with the iTunes 11 software, and it might have to do with imported older iTunes libraries. Either way, a clean install of OS X does not help.

Seem issue here it never happened before the iTunes 11 update, it does seem to be a computer sleep issue. I set the computer to sleep after 1 minute and sure enough the Airplay and ATV dropped out after 1 minutes, same for 3 minutes & 5 minutes. Set to "never" and so far no drop outs or you can also play music at the source iMac, laptop, etc. . . While is playing to your airplay speakers, so your computer never goes to sleep. I did it all day yesterday without a single dropout.
