Both Sprint and Verizon will unlock phones for their own customers. Verizon's iPhone 5s are sold unlocked.

You're correct. Verizon won't activate Sprint phones.

But after contract, correct? I'm under the impression that he still has time on his. Or maybe I missed it if he said it was no contract. I still don't think he legitimately unlocked his phone via Apple, however.

Verizon, at least, doesn't require that you be out of contract to have your phone unlocked. You have to be a VZW customer in good standing for 60 days and they will only unlock a phone for that phone number once a year.

SO if you have a phone set up with Verizon they will unlock it so you can switch right ???

You should really start your own at this point.

You would have to ask Verizon if they will unlock your iPhone.

At this point, since the iPhone 5, an LTE phone, the GSM side of all Verizon phones are unlocked from the start. That is part of an agreement with the FCC regarding the auctioning of LTE bands.
