NTP problems

This thread is a continuation of this post, which was somewhat hijacked by myself.

The output from ntpq -c la is as follows:

<pre>

ind assID status conf reach auth condition last_event cnt
===========================================================
1 33260 9014 yes yes none reject reachable 1

</pre>
I believe ntpd -q should do pretty much the same as ntpdate, but in my case, stopping the ntpd service, then issusing this command results in absolutely nothing happening, indicating that ntpd cannot sync and exit.
I have 2 Macs attached to my network, and both exhibit exactly the same behaviour - you'd start to think it was a network problem at this stage, right? However, monitoring network traffic (both from Macs and from within router), I can see that when I run ntpd -q, there is absolutely no network activity as a result of this command.

Sorry I only just noticed your post, since this topic is now pretty old.

I can't reply instantly, since I'll need to refresh my memory about all this, but will try to get back to you over the weekend. You seem to have been trying the right things, but I am not so familiar with the Intel machines as with PPC. Nevertheless the NTP service should be platform-neutral.

Bear with me for a couple of days!

Hello Michael

No problem i can wait 😉

I agree with you, the NTPD Service should be the same on both platforms.
It worked without any problems with my sold Power Mac G5 Dual-Core.
The iMac Core Duo had already the same NTPD error with Mac OS X 10.4.4, the 10.4.6 and 10.4.7 Updates changed nothing.

I tried what Apple in the Knowledgebase says: "Mac OS X 10.4: Network Time clients lose synchronization"
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303731

The disadvantage is, i have to update manually this way (Command: sudo SystemStarter -d restart "Network Time")

Tried also the ntp Server IP instead of Server Name, to make sure it isnt a DNS problem, no luck.
I changed it back to the original settings a few days ago, the error is still there, but it works if i open the Date & Time settings.

Looking for host time.euro.apple.com and service ntp
host found : media1r.euro.apple.com
6 Jul 22:21:21 ntpdate[1445]: step time server 17.72.133.45 offset 0.805620 sec

Apart of it, it seems the Timeserver has a Round Robin DNS entry, Round robin works on a rotating basis in that one server IP address is handed out, then moves to the back of the list; the next server IP address is handed ...
