iTunes 11 Won't Let Me Add Songs To Library

When I try to import songs (MP3's) into my library literally nothing happens. At one point it was making the little cloud icon beside where it says "Music" have moving lines. But that went on for a while and I decided to shut down iTunes and open it up again. It continued to have moving lines for a few minutes and then stopped. But none of the songs that I tried to add showed up in the library. I tried numerous times and numerous ways (even playing each individual song so that iTunes would play it and post it in the library...well, it played it but never showed up in the library). I did stumble upon it being in the "Recently Added" playlist, but it's not in the regular library and I see no way of actually adding these songs to the library. If someone could help, that would be greatly appreciated.

Had what I thought were similiar problems in adding files to the itunes library, but they turned out not to be technical ones at all ! - thanks to butterpaper for pointing me in the right direction.

itunes was working fine, the problem was that, as per butterpaper post, the album artist was not in the MP3 tag, so itunes was putting the songs into the library using the contributing artist field and this placed them somewhere I wasn't expecting. So my recommendation ? - if you've got a specific set of files that don't seem to be being added (as opposed to a general, can't add anything) and nothing happens when you try again, check the MP3 tag of the file and see if itunes has just placed it somewhere you didn't expect. (In windows, right mouse click the file, select <properties> and look at the [details] tab. )

I had an exFat formatted external hard drive. I tried everything. I moved files from the external hard drive to my internal hard drive. I then reformatted my external hard drive to NTFS (because I plan on keeping my hard drive hooked only up to my windows desktop) and moved a couple of movies over to it to test if I was able to add files to itunes.

It worked. I am now able to go to Files->Add to Library (Ctrl+O) without making a copy to my itunes folder. I am now able to watch everything from my external hard drive on my apple TV. I hope this helps someone. I spent many hours scouring the web for something...anything to help.

None of these answers worked for me. I didn't have any of the options selected and I can not edit the folders. Itunes is adding NONE of the music from the folders I have selected. If I choose an individual file it may or may not add it but adding one file at a time is not going to work for FOLDERSSS of music. I need a realistic fix. My files are not showing up under recently added but not playing nor are they copied into my itunes folder. I have even tried adding old music folders that are on my internal but it still will not add that either. If a fix can not be found I'm going to have to downgrade to itunes10 or sadly I may return to the dark days of WMP.

TOC when you right click any file on your computer, there should be an option "Open with...". Once you click that option, you browse to where iTunes is located on your computer, and you choose iTunes as the program to open your file with. After that your music file should definitely open in iTunes. Once it is open in iTunes, you just drag andd drop it to your ipod icon to add the music to your ipod.

I had this happen, and I resolved it by editing the properties of the MP3 and updating the song title. I did this in Windows Explorer (right-click, then Properties), not through iTunes.

I think this happened (for me) because the library database file (ITL) didn't update properly when I deleted songs from from the iTunes Media folder. I had to do this because the songs in the iTunes library were not found, so when I deleted from the library, they didn't delete from the iTunes Media folder.

I've got my iTunes library on an external hard drive, and if it is ejected (or just unplugged), iTunes acts inconsistently.

I had ejected the drive with iTunes open, then plugged it back in. I could play songs from my library, and iTunes worked as expected - until I tried to File - Add to Library...

I could pick the files (also on the external drive), and iTunes acted normally, letting me select the files, but then didn't process the new files. They were not copied to the library on the hard drive, nor did they show up in iTunes. There were no error messages or other warnings.

Restarting iTunes fixed the problem.

BTW, Mac OSX Yosemite 10.10.1 & iTunes 12.0.1.26 - about to be upgraded to 12.1. Hopefully that will fix this bug.

"I had ejected the drive with iTunes open, then plugged it back in"

That answers your question - if your library is on an external drive, it should be connected before you start iTunes, and you should exit iTunes before you disconnect it. If your complete library (including the iTunes database) is on the external drive, iTunes is writing to that drive all the time; removing the drive while iTunes is running will disrupt those operations, producing inconsistent results and a risk of corrupting the database.

Apart from the requirement to authorize devices used to play or sync iTunes Store purchases, and some specific media types that require user authentication (e.g., audiobooks purchased from Audible) you can add any compatible media files to iTunes. There is nothing that checks "that those mp3 music belongs to you" (though I don't see why such a scheme should not be added, if technically feasible and commercially feasible).
