Boom!

Here is a tip, which helped me out.
Yahoo settings don't allow mail app to run it. In order to solve it, do the following: Go to Yahoo mail account in browser - point mouse on gear sign at the upper right - choose "Account information" - go to account inf. - scroll down and check "allow apps that less secure sign in".

Hope will help.

I also occasionally get this message. I will also periodically get a message stating that there is an iCloud problem related to yahoo, and to open system preferences. I am just guessing, but both problems are most likely related. I am thinking that their is most likely sill an unfixed minor glitch in iCloud. Since this problem is mostly just an annoyance, and doesn't seem to affect getting of yahoo mail, in mac mail, I doubt that the Mac team will fix this soon. It took them an awful long time to even acknowledge there was a problem wt time machine, and fix it wt an update. Actually had an upper level forum guy reply, well if it's such a problem, then why aren't others complaining. So I sent him the 13 page, list of complaints about time machine. Apple may say no one monitors this forum, but several days later, a mysterious update appeared that fixed Time Machine. Unfortunately I can't see apple fixing this problem, at least anytime soon. Even though the cloud, is becoming even more synonymous wt apple then time machine, I can't see them fixing this problem, until their are a lot more complaints. Perhaps the problem is on yahoo's end, but it doesn't really appear that way, especially considering all of the the Wifi related updates we have gotten.

Mail consistantly fails to connect to both gmail and bigpond/telstra servers (Australia).

Yesterday Mail worked fine, today no.

I haven't changed any settings during this time.

Since two different accounts are unavailable then its not a server problem.

Mail is the problem.

It does this consistently again and again and again and again ............

I can access webmail for both accounts in Safari browser,

Why, over a period of two days should two/2 different accounts fail?

This has gone on for years, surely Apple can fix it.

You should also provide simple instructions Apple to remedy this, some of the fixes I've seen on discussion.apple forums need a nerd degree in order to understand them!

Mail and system asking for gmail password.

Both my accounts blocked from accessing mail.

I've uncovered one problem that was blocking my email accounts, Little Snitch was causing mail to be blocked, after a discussion with the LS forum I realised I needed to make an LS rule for Mail, once done this fixed that particular problem.

However, Mail is now blocking my email again, both accounts, and I keep getting requests for my Gmail password.

When I respond System Prefs opens at the accounts window and a blank window with a whirling grey 'wait' icon appears and spins forever.

I've refreshed the passwords for both my accounts in Mail. Didn't help.

Would love to solve this (perennial) problem.

I Had to reinstall OS X and then setting up the yahoo email worked. I had tried to delete the yahoo account and that didn't work for me. In yahoo browser mail there may be a notice saying that you have enabled less secure logins. I enabled that. I'm not sure it is necessary but it was around the time they started asking that when my apple mail started having difficulty logging in.

I had the same problem and the culprit turned out to be the two-factor authentication setting in the yahoo mail settings.

my resolution:

1. delete yahoo mail account from iMac internet accounts

2. turn off two factor authentication in the yahoo mail account settings

3. added yahoo mail account back onto iMac (it added fine this time)

4. synchronize yahoo mail on iMac

5. went through process to turn back on two-factor authentication in yahoo mail settings (on internet not on the iMac)

everything is working now.

Try logging into your yahoo mail account from internet and go through the following steps to fix the problem.

From yahoo mail page click on account info/ account security/

scroll down and click on manage app password/ select mac mail from drop down menu/ hit generate and copy paste the password generated into the mac mail server page by following the directions.

I had the same problem and fixed it this way. It took me an hour to figure out. Figured it out the hard way. So thought of posting to help others.
