iCal data recovery

I recently installed Mountyain Lion (10.8.2) n my MacBook Pro. I never backed up iCal before installing Mountain Lion (never knew I needed to do that). Can I retrieve the data that is not showing when I opened iCal with the new operating software?

I also beleve I lost some folders in my mail program inthe upgrade.

You should always backup prior to an operating system replacement, in fact you should always backup your data (unless it doesn't matter whether you lose it)

Is this a local calendar or online, if online is it iCloud or Google etc

I know that now but there were no instructions to warn in advance and I'm not exactly a techie. Furthermore, some of the things I am supposed to be able to do to back up iCal according to Apple, don't seem to exist in the newer version; or at least are buried somewhere. Better insructions before downloading would be helpful. Years ago, Aple had copious notes tht came with new software. I don't see much of that now.

That's an excuse, it's your data, if you want to keep it then back it up. Time Machine works with you having to make choices, and you already have it, use it.

And you never actually answered my question, are these missing calendars local or hosted, yes or no would be good, accompanied by the host(s) name(s)

Except for the birthdays, the calendars do appear to be the same.

Then the iCloud calendar is working, the birthday calendar is a subscription so subscribe to it wherever you need it.

Understand that only events on the iCloud calendar appear on iCloud devices, if you have a Google calendar (and you may) it is accessible in iCal (if you entered it there) and Googles website, it is not going to appear at www.icloud.com.
