iTunes 11: "Movies" vs. "Home Videos"

So when in the "Movies" section of iTunes, there are views including Unwatched, Genres, Movies, Home Videos, and List. I want to move some video content from "Home Videos" to "Movies". How do I do this?

I changed mine, and mine are located outside the iTunes folder and some on external HD, by highlighting, click "get info" click on Options tab and change the media kind to whatever you want. The only ones I had greyed out were a couple of movies I had bought through iTines and a free video clip from iTunes. Otherwise, I can do what I want with the files.

Also, if I move files from one folder to another, I then have to tell iTunes where to find them as I have mine set up to manually add, move files etc. Not sure if this is the same moving within iTunes folder unless you have auto sync set up.

It's a little convoluted, but then that's iTunes. When you drag items using Finder, if it's just an m4v file, iTunes assumes that it is a home video and automatically moves it to that category (and folder). In order for iTunes to see it as a "movie" and put it in that category, you have to do the following:

1. Put the files in the "Home Movies" folder and add them to your Library;

2. They will show up in the Home Movies category;

3. Now, while in iTunes and in the Home Movies category, select all of the ones you want to be in the "Movies" category;

4. While they are selected right click and go into "info", and then "options";

5. You should see a media type option that will say "home movie";

6. Change that to "movie".

What that will do is create a folder for each movie, and move the movie and the folder over to the Movies folder and delete it from the Home Movies folder. It also adds a hidden ".DS" file the each folder. Yes, it's a stupid thing to have to go through, and I've got a lot of movies, but for some strange reason known only to Apple, you have to go through this drill in order for Apple to "process" it as a movie.

Have you made sure they are added to the iTunes library and selected to be synced onto your phone? Neither of those things happens automatically.

Check your iTunes library first. If the moves are not there, then go to "File" and "Add to Library" ... then find the movie or movies and add them.

Then, hook up your phone to sync. When iTunes sees the phone, go to that device select the "Movies" tab and check the boxes next to the movie(s) you want to sync. Both your home movies and any theatrical moves should be in there for you to select.

I hope this helps.

I had the same problem -- I uploaded a TV show and it went into Home Movies. Even though it wasn't a read-only file, the options in Get Info were greyed out so I couldn't move the video. After much trial and error, I found that if I disconnected my iPad from my computer I could go to my Library in iTunes, right-click the file, and change it to a TV Show. When I re-connected the iPad and sync'd, the file was reloaded and appeared in the right place. Intuitive? NOT.

Toby Richards! I love you! This fix fixed my iTunes 12 mess up! was not able to see my home videos a genre folders on the side bar - was only able to see the "my movies" on the side bar separated by each genre. Going to all my home videos - get info - options and changing the media from home video to movies fixed the whole thing! I think all of you complaining about iTune 12 well one of the problems had a real easy fix!!

There used to be a "Home Movies" section in iTunes. It is no longer there. I am so frustrated about this; I am at the point to give-up on the iPad and get a Samsung Galaxy. I do not understand what Apple as a company is doing. It seems that in their attempt to control ones ability to load their own content. It is actually making people like me, who have been a long time supporter, move away to alternative companies and products.
