which iTunes for Windows version number

Have you installed the latest update to iTunes, 11.0.1? If not do so and see if there is any improvement. I guess it is possible that iTunes' drivers could be causing problems, in which case it is likely that the update would address those issues. The acid test would be rebooting with a bootable disc, e.g. a Windows System Disc, to test your hardware. As long as that works you can be sure it is a software issue.

Perhaps a friend can lend you a Windows install CD, or indeed any kind of bootable CD such as those that sometimes come with AV or utility software. You just want to rule out drivers being an issue. Starting in safe mode is probably as good. I suspect a CD should be readable in safe mode using standard BIOS calls without a Windows driver having been loaded, though I can't say for certain. If the drive contents do display in safe mode then you know it is a driver issue.
