Apple TV Purchases Backed Up In Itunes But Will Not Show In Home Sharing On Ipad

This problem is bizzare.

Basically I have had Apple TV for a while but really only made some purchases from the interface on the TV the other day. (Besides Rentals)

Normally I buy the movie directly on my macbook and download it. Then go watch it on my Apple TV.

This time I bought on Apple TV then went to Itunes and downloaded it off the cloud. Any movie I have purchased from the Apple TV will not show up on Home Sharing (Sharing from my Macbook to my Ipad2) Even though it was purchased with the same apple id and the movies are physically downloaded to itunes on the macbook.

If I pull up Sidebar in Itunes 11 and click itunes store and then purchases my movies show up. (That's how I downloaded them to itunes) Although, if I click "purchased" from the Sidebar (Under Itunes Store) the movies purchased from the Apple TV do not show up. It's almost like Apple Tv let me back them up but did not associate them with the itunes account.User uploaded file

Yeah, if I buy the movie on iTunes it will automatically show up on Apple TV and will Home Share fine. I noticed this when I bought Prometheus during the 15 dollar promotion in September I think. I randomly decided well I'm at my computer now I will just buy it here. (thinking why does it matter where I buy it?) Oh was I wrong. Buying from the computer is definitely a superior purchasing method yet I can't stop buying from my couch because of the convenience... (super lazy.) haha

Yeah so go to Itunes on your computer. There should be a little button next to the episode, movie, etc. that says download from icloud. Click on that and it will download the movie to the computer. I was having the exact same issue and that fixed it for me. I thought it had downloaded the shows to the computer and even clicked on "check for available downloads". But apparently you have to dl it from the cloud or whatever.

Just this past week I used AppleTV to make a purchase for the first time (previously had only used to rent). As with you, my past practice had always been to buy on iTunes on iMac, wait to download, then watch on AppleTV.

So tonight I went to iTunes to see if they had automatically downloaded and they hadn't. So I tried "check for available downloads" and that didn't work. Then I found this discussion. After reading the posts, I kept searching, and then found these instructions on how to at least get them downloaded:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/inside-itunes/2011/08/access-your-previously-purchas ed-tv-shows-with-all-your-devices.html

I followed the directions. My movie (in HD) downloaded to my iMac. Then I tried Home Sharing on my iPhone 5. It worked. Then I tried it on my iPad 2 (non-retina, doesn't support HD) and it didn't work. That is, the movie didn't show up on Home Sharing

Here's what I think is happening. I bought it in HD on AppleTV. The iMac pulled it down in HD. The iPad doesn't support HD, so no Home Sharing for that title. A few years ago, when you bought an HD movie, it would download both HD and SD automatically. I don't think that's the case anymore, at least not when you start with AppleTV then bring it down through the cloud later.

But I think I found a work-around. If you go to your iPad and download it again, it will automatically come down in SD on your iPad. Then, you can then connect the iPad directly to the Mac and (I think) transfer it to the Mac. Then it should be available on Home Sharing and you can delete it from the iPad. I've used this method before but it was awhile ago and it wasn't to fix a Home Sharing issue. I'm testing it right now, but thought I'd post now since it will be a few hours before the download is complete and I'll know the results.

Hope this made sense. If so, give it a try and let us know how it goes.

Actually, I'm wrong. I don't think it's an HD-SD issue. I think it's a 720p-1080p issue. iPad 2 does support HD, but only in 720p. I was confused last night and possibly still am!

My movie in question was bought in 1080p. I downloaded it onto the iPad 2 last night in 720p. I think my fix idea above would have worked if the iPad 2 would have downloaded SD (which actually isn't even available for this title). But I'm not sure there is a way for both 720p and 1080p versions of the same title to exist in a library.

Possible new fix: delete the 1080p version from iTunes. Then change iTunes preferences >>> "Store" to prefer downloading 720p, go back to Purchased in the store and re-download. Haven't tested this yet.

I realize it's entirely possible your preferences are already set to 720p, which would mean there's now way this will solve your issue.

Another interesting note. Now if I click "Purchased" on the left sidebar (if you have sidebar enabled) I see all the movies I have purchased regardless of the device they were purchased from which before it only showed purchases from that particular computer or device. Seems like they made it a unified list of all purchases which has completely fixed my issue.

I have purchased a TV series on my apple tv, and a movie on my laptop, and now I'd like to download both these items onto my imac. I cannot for the life of me find any way to download already purchased content. if I follow the instructions of apple and look for that content in my library, to then be able to click the download from cloud icon.... well the items are no where to be found. They dont show up in my library.

Yes I have home sharing on, yes I have the right account logged in, yes automatic downloads on.

What else could I be doing wrong?

Not sure if this will help but I had a similar problem. In order to get the purchases that I made on my Apple TV I had to go into my iTunes preferences, hit the store tab, and check the "show iTunes in the cloud purchases" after that, all tv shows and movie purchases that were made on the Apple TV showed up in my iTunes with a cloud next to it. You can click on the cloud and download all these purchases that were made on your Apple TV to your iTunes on your Mac. Hope this helps.

I wish this would fix my issue, I have tried all of these ideas with no luck. Everything I have bought on my MacMini shares nicely, everything I bought on the Apple TV doesn't. Whats also interesting is if I select one of those movies, and click on the right arrow next to the title and say show in itunes store, it shows it to me with the option to purchase it as if I have never bought it. I would be half tempted to try to buy it again and see if it recognized that I had already bought it, but would hate to have to another $15! Any other ideas? This is really ridiuclous.
