Desktop freezing

I have had an occassional problem with my desktop freezing ane becoming unresponsive. Nothing on the desktop is clickable and it does not update. For example, if I take a screen show of an app window when the desktop is frozen, the screen show will not appear on the desktop although if I view the desktop folder in the finder the screen shot appears. Can't identify anything specific I am doing prior to it freezing. Anyone else experiencing this and have a solution?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion

I'm not sure this information applies or not. I'm not getting the SBBOD, the desktop just doesn't respond.

A freeze may or may not be accompanied by a SBBOD, but it's a starting place.

I wonder....I've also noticed that on occassions when finder crashes or I have to force a restart of it, applicaitons and finder no longer communicate ("open in finder" or "show in finder" et cetera, no longer work). I wonder if the two issues could be related.

Possibly. Create a new admin user account, log into it, and see if the problem persists.

It's so sporadic that I'm not sure it would be worth that much trouble, especially since several of my apps would have to be reactivated to be used with a new profile (their Adobe products and those folks are rather....anal).
