Can I transfer 8mm video from my Sony Handycam(analog) to my or through my Mac Pro with iMovie?

Is there a cable I need to hook my Sony Handycam 8 mm (analog) up to my Mac Pro in order to transfer it to a dvd?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2010), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

If your Sony Handycam is truly analog you will need an intermediate device to convert it to digital. This can be a digital camcorder that will accept analog inputs.

Sony "Digital 8" camcorders can read your 8 mm analog cassette tapes directly, and output them in digital format for iMovie. I do not know if these are still commonly available.

If all this is too much trouble for you there are many services that will convert your existing analog videotapes to a DVD. I have used a company called YesVideo for this service so look into that. My only complaint is that they do not know how to deinterlace the video, but most HDTVs and even Macs will compensate for interlaced video.

Just imagine Super 8 film... with sound stripe 😮

My Dad was a Super 8 freak - any holiday, vacation, etc., he'd lug the thing along with an enormous tripod. I had those converted to VHS but lost them long, long ago.

My very first video camera was a VHS black & white. I finally upgraded to a two-piece color system - recorder went over one shoulder and camera on the other. Don't know whatever happened to those, either.

Sigh... nostalgia...
