I am trying to move my iphoto and itunes to an external hard drive to free up space on my macbook...i have followed the steps to the change itunes media folder location (chosen external hard drive) but my new folder is greyed out so cant continue ?help?

Does your external drive show up in the Finder? I see that you are new to the Apple Support Communities. Don't be shy with your questions.

I have some for you. What is the brand name of your external drive? How did you transfer your tunes to the external drive? Have you examined the permissions for the exteanal drive?

I'm not sure what you mean when you say that your folder location is 'grayed out'? Did you follow the instructions for moving your iTunes folder here -->> http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449?

As far as your iPhoto Library, all you really need to do is drag and drop to the new location and hold down the option key when you next open iPhoto - then you'll be given the opportunity to choose the location of your moved library.

Oh - yes you need to format your drive for use with your Mac. Open Disk Utility (located in Applications>Utilities) and select your external drive. Erase it and format it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a single GUID partition.

It may be formatted for Windows and that may be your problem.

So it's not showing up on the Desktop or in the left pane of Disk Utility? Try rebooting with the drive plugged in and then check it again...

Did you open the Disk Utility app which is in your Applications>Utilities folder? You need to have that open and the drive should let you select it, erase it using "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a single GUID partition.

Make sure that you have Disk Utility open - if you can't find it, use Spotlight and type in Disk Utility - it should be the first hit.
