I just upgraded my iMac with Lion and now have OS 10.7.5, and now I have a message that "You can't open the application Microsoft Word because PowerPC applications are no longer supported." However, I run Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac on my PowerBook Pro--is it possible to do something to the 2004 edition to make it work with the upgrade? Or do I have to buy a new Microsoft office program?

It isn't going to happen. Lion is not able to execute PowerPC code since Rosetta was dropped. Office 2004 is code for the PowerPC.
You are either going to have to buy the new version from Microsoft or run OpenOffice instead.

Thanks--that's what I was afraid of.
I found the other versions of this question AFTER I posted mine--silly of me...and nice of you not to point it out.
I will look at OpenOffice but I dislike iWork so will likely get the new Microsoft version.

I'm not in love with Microsoft either but I know the programs and find it too exasperating to relearn all the shortcuts and such.
I like OpenOffice--good reviews. Maybe I'll try it. Do you like it?
I use it for Word documents I am sent.
I prefer to create my own documents in Pages.
