Iphone 5's screen turned into vertical stripes.

I was playing game on my iphone 5 and suddenly the screen turned into white and gray vertical stripes. I tried to turn off the phone but no success. What is the problem with my phone? Is it software issue or just screen quality issue?

The same thing happened to me when I woke up this morning - vertical stripes across the screen. I went straight to the genius bar and they replaced my phone. This is a hardware issue and cannot be fixed. As long as your phone isn't too damaged, they'll give you a new one in exchange at no cost. I was in and out of the genius bar within 30 minutes. Good luck!

I have had a problem with the iPhone 5 as well. I had upgraded from one of the 4's and there was a battery issue with the phone that apple was "aware" of. They were replacing the batteries for free. I guess the batteries are less expensive to fix than all the complaints about stripes/vertical lines appearing out of nowhere on the phone. It can't be fixed and a new screen is required. When I went to the genius bar to fix the issue of the battery, they said they know of the problem and will replace it. They didnt have the better in stock and it would have to ordered. Since my phone was still under warranty they said or they could give me a new phone now. I opted for the new phone because I didnt want to wait and have to come back. I have had the new phone for 4 months and I was just on my Facebook app when these lines just appeared. I shut it off, hooked it up to my mac and that didnt work. I brought it to apple and they said That they can reset the cables to see if that would work but I would have to commit to buying a new screen for $130 if that didnt work. RIDICULOUS! The replacement phone was only warrantied for 90 days. Well I missed it by a month and brand new replacements should be warrantied for longer. Or why is this not a free replacement of the screen as the battery since I have googled this problem and there are many with the same issue? How many complaints does apple need to consider it a free fix since it is a defect in their phone and nothing I did? I am not expecting a new phone or anything for free, I am expecting apple to stand by their product. I purchased this phone as an upgrade. I did my part, the battery defect was not my fault and so is stripes appearing on the screen for no reason. I take care of my phone and they are in perfect condition always. Not even a scratch. All I want is what I paid for, A working phone with no defects!

I found out how to do it without reseting it! You go to Settings --> General -->Accessibility --> then slide invert colors or gray scale (don't know which one I slid) on and then just click the sleep/ power button once to let it sleep. Then when i turned it on it was all better! And the invert colors or gray scale still showed as not turned on

To my amazement, this worked for me too. Thanks msichala!

For future readers, here's what was happening to me. This morning, I turned on my phone and it had vertical stripes. The stripes were wide, and alternated between lighter and darker in color. At the same time, touch responsiveness was very buggy. The phone would take 2-3 seconds to respond to a touch, then would respond to multiple touches that I did not make. I tried restarting the phone, but the problem did not go away.

Somehow I managed to open the Settings and get to Accessibility. It took awhile because of the buggy responsiveness of the touch screen. Once there, I toggled both invert colors and gray scale.

The problem went away immediately and the phone has worked fine for the last several hours. Fingers crossed the fix sustains.
