X in Battery icon

Coconut Battery has N/A for everything except Mac Model (Macbook Pro 1,2) and Age of your Mac (77 Months)

When the Magsafe adapter is connected it is orange. The computer runs when it is disconected. The computer will not boot up without the magsafe connector connected. I'm currently leaving it on and unplugged trying to run the battery down.

I've removed the battery and re-installed - Sill had an X

I've reset the SMC and still have the X

I've reset NVRAM and still have the X

After 1 or 2 reboots (and the magsafe connected) I did get the charging icon with 0%. It went back to an X after 20 or 30 seconds. Immediately after booting and showing the 0%, About this Mac shows a battery is connected. When it goes back to the X and I refresh the System Profile page, it says No battery installed.

I bought this computer used and I've had it for approx 2 years. Haven't had any issues up till now. I installed more memory the day I bought it and replaced the harddrive (needed a larger one) about 18 months ago.

Any help is appreciated.
