IMAP outlook.com email account

After the first pane where you enter your name, email address, and password, hold down the option key when pressing "Next". This will allow you to specify the server settings.

You can either look at the settings your iOS device is using or follow the directions at http://help.outlook.com/en-ca/140/cc511390.aspx for figuring out the server settings.

No it's not I'm afraid. On iOS devices Outlook.com (hotmail, live mail etc) email uses the Exchange ActiveSync protocol (not IMAP) but this protocol is for mobile devices only. On OS X you've currently only got pop3/smtp (unless you count mbox mail for Mac but that's $20 and has not proven to be reliable for me).

There's recent (august 2012) talk from MS hinting at IMAP or a dedicated OS X client but nothing has materialised so far. Google's decision to drop Exchange Activesync support for gmail might get them moving though.

After god knows how long a wait, Microsoft has finally added imap support to outlook.com/live/hotmail! 🙂

Good the imap finally, but it doesn't work well yet. When you delete a message on ammple mail it is not deleted online but the message id duplicated in a new folderl "deleted messages".
