How to update firmware for SSD

Its weird, I used the bootable iso to create a startup disc for dos. It ran through the update and at the end said firmware mismatch but look below it is the new number? Did it update even though it claimed to have failed?

i would like to create a bootable USB drive with the samsung .ISO file found on:

If you format the USB to a FAT and then run dd if=YourISOName of=/Volumes/USB, can you boot from the USB?

I tried testing this, but the FreeDOS used in the OS X updater did not work from the USB. The other strange part is that I have a 256Gb 840 Pro that I have updated to DXM06B0Q, but that software is not available for download anymore, I keep getting DXM05B0Q, which is older.

Let me do some more testing and I will post my findings. The Magician software requires a Bootcamp Windows installation unnecessarily.

I was able to boot my Mac Mini from a usb thumbdrive to the Samsung updater. I did that by following the instructions how to create a bootable thumbdrive at http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Crucial-SSDs/Updating-firmware-on-Macs-without-a-sup erdrive/td-p/61259 .

My firmware was uptodate but now I am awaiting the degradation-fix firmware.

Yesterday I've tried burning the ISO file and also converting to a CDR and then burn the image and tried to run the Samsung updater via an external USB optical disc reader with no luck. I've also tried to keep the machine running all night… after choosing the "windows" dvd at boot my system showed the Apple logo and nothing more.

The Crucial tips works, or the only way for me is to create a BootCamp installation of Windows and then update from there?

DXM05B0Q does not work, but DXM06B0Q does because Samsung changed it. Samsung will have to support USB, otherwise there is very little that can be done.

The External USB does not work, because the Samsung software is looking for information from the connection, that it wants to be a SATA connection, but it is a USB connection and fails.

The Crucial method of creating a bootable USB works for Crucial software, but not for Samsung.

I was able to upgrade the firmware (to DXM06B0Q) on my Mac Mini with a bootable USB thumbdrive. I followed the instructions on the crucial forum (posted above) to create a bootable USB thumbdrive with FreeDOS. Then I simply replaced the .IMG file on the USB thumbdrive with the .IMG file I copied from the Samsung firmware ISO (visible after mounting the ISO).

The upgrade took less than half an hour on the 840 EVO.

The 05B0Q version does not work via USB, but 06B0Q does work.

Unfortunately the firmware for the 840EVO seems that can't work using the Crucial way of preparing the USB stick… I got an error message from Apple firmware not fully sypporting old OS.

Mine is a mid.2010 MacBook Pro. I fear I'll have to remove the 2nd disk and remount the superdrive at this point

There is nothing "tricky" about using or what TRIM Enabler 3.x (and others) do. Nor would I say it falls into the category of being a 'hack.'

Though now YOSEMITE has made it next to impossible or much more difficult. This kind of lack of support for SSDs is just plain "we refuse to bother making sure our system works with Samsung retail and other devices" slap in the face for an operating system.

Modifying a kext by doing hex byte replacement is rather a hack. Apple does not want you replace hardware in your Mac, but you should but it from Apple. 😉
