so i would have to just copy the update onto a usb drive and upload it through that?
@Grant...You are using a KIngston SSD, but OP was referring to a Samsung SSD. Two different products.
I am in the same boat, just bought a samsung 840 pro SSD and am trying to look for a way to upgrade the firmware to the latest version.
Has anyone found a resolution to this yet?
Talking to Samsung Tech Support has been a slow process with a final admission that FreeDOS-based route does not work on OS X. Not sure why Samsung chose not to use EFI route.
So how are you meant to update the 840 pro SSD?
Install Windows. You can usually get a trial demo, or find a PC.
The PC route requires one to pull out the SSD, upgrade firmware, and put it back in the Mac. This process has to repeated for every firmware update for the SSD. 😢
repeat rinse wash.. how many firmware updates to you envision? are SSD vendors that bad?
If the drive works, you do NOT need to update the firmware.
I have owned 5 Seagate 7200.11 drives, all of which are still in use, with ZERO issues.
has anyone tried using the Mac ISO posted here?

It's a solution to a different piece of hardware entirely and differs due to the fact that the installer he refers to is bootstrapped toa *NIX environment and Samsung's is based on a DOS one.
Thanks for the clarification. I had missed the concept that Samsung demanded DOS.
Yes I was successful using this method. I burned the ISO to a CD using Disk Utility, rebooted my Mac and went through the steps. Took less than 10 minutes to do everything.
