Mac Pro won't connect to Ethernet

My Mac Pro will not connect to the internet, but it connects to Wifi via my comcast modem.


the modem was switched out today, but I couldn't connect before that - which is why they came and replaced my modem.


The lights in the Diagnostics window say:


Ethernet: connected


Wifi: connected


ISP: Fail


Internet: Fail


Server: Fail


Any ideas?

I don't know how I would connect. Please give me exact instructions on how to do that once I am in Recovery mode and the Safari page is up.


When I was in recovery mode and I asked for help online, it was just a safari page with options on it. I chose the one to repair the disk.


Otherwise I have no idea what you wanted me to do.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.


Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

  • Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
  • When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
  • If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.


Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.


Test while in safe mode. Same problem?


After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Did this when on the phone with the apple tech and had the same result as now.


After booting in Safe mode the Apple and a progress bar appears. The bar fills in 1/5th of the way and then hangs up. I let the comuter sit like this for hours, and the progress bar did not get any farther than this, so I couldn't actually get into safe mode.

Back up all data to at least two different storage devices.


Boot into Recovery, launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This operation will destroy all data on the volume, so you had be better be sure of your backups. Quit Disk Utility and install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.


When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you transfer the data from one of your backups. For a walkthrough, see here:


Using Setup Assistant


Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.


Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.

Hey Linc,


Thank you soo much for all of this. I am not going to have time to do this latest "assignment" for a few weeks. Just wanted to let you know. I'm starting a new job, and will be tied up for a bit. Also, I'm getting a new laptop in a few days (it was delivered today!), so hopefully that will connect via ethernet.


I Will try this method once I have some time, but I just wanted you to know it would not be immediately.


I reeealllly appreciate all of your help, and I will def try this step to get to the bottom of this.
