file-size is of no relevance in DVD production.
and the max. length depends on the tool you're using:
iDVD supports up to 120min on a single-layer DVD.
Toast even more, but quality drops dramatically beyond 60min - imho.
Would that it were so, Karsten. Apple, in its wisdom, made iDVD do away. In Mountain Lion, I have to expert the movie to QuickTime then burn the .mov file to the dvd disk. I, therefore, have to make sure my iMovie/QT are not too long.
I use double layer DVDs all the time. I find I can go about 3 hours and 45 min. per disc
I'm stuck with the installed SuperDrive that is only single layer.

a disk burned in Finder/Disk Utility is NOT compatible with DVDplayers!
you're creating 'just' a dataDVD, which can be used only with computers.
if you don't own iDVD, you're options are listed in this user tipp

Apple's original Superdrives support DL media …–
Apple made iDVD go away.
IDVD remains very popular in the Macintosh community.
You can purchase iLife 11 (includes iDVD) on disk.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

Yes, there are programs that will put a movie on a DVD. I have tried most of the other substitutes including Toast, Burn, DVD Creator, Wondershare, and others. None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD. IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie.
With iDVD you can easily and quickly create DVDs with menus and graphics almost on the level of what Hollywood can do.

one of my older websites was about that:
I used iDVD for years and loved it. But Apple made it go away. It is no longer for sale. I have a replacement machine that came with iLife '11 preloaded. No iDVD. Apple apparently has decided that optic is over. Tough on you if you want to. OTOH, there are apps (one free) in the App Store that burn DVDs.
