There are a lot of cameras that you can copy photos from (you can't use a camera with the iPad for use with, for example, Skype if that is one of the things that you'd like to do). The iPad's camera connection kit has two parts, an SD card reader and a cable for connecting to a camera and copying photos/videos directly from it - so if the camera uses SD cards then you should be able to use the kit to copy photos, for direct transfer from a camera, the camera needs to support PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol, Pictbridge) or 'Mass Storage Device' mode.
