Sending fax via USB cable connected to fax supported printer

Hi there,

Recently switched from PC to MAC, found out that there is no telephone line slot on the computer so I am assuming there is no modem in it. But I have a canon mx308 all in one printer which supports faxing as well. Is there any way I can connect the printer with standard USB cable and use the printer to send out the faxes directly from computer? Appreciated.

The Mac already picked up and installed the drivers for printer automatically and both print and scan options are working fine but there is no option / tab coming up for fax in settings> print & scan of Mac.

Thanks for the help.

Cheers

Is the Printer on when you go to Fax & Print?

I don't have a Canon printer, but my Epson AIO only functions as a fax machine if I put the letter/document in its scan tray. They have instructions in the manual, so you might want to check your Canon manual to see what they suggest. The Epson also does have a phone connection.

Modems haven't been built in for quite some time now; there used to be an external little USB modem dongle, but that hasn't been available for a while either. I don't know if ML still supports faxing (I don't know which OS you're on - you are not on iOS 6.01 on a Mac) - I could only get it to work by using the printer's LCD menu (the Print & Scan does not see the printer as a fax machine).

Hi there,

Thanks!

Actually all options printing, scanning and also faxing working fine independently on "All in one printer" Canon MX308. Printing and scaning also working fine with mac but when it comes to faxing directly through Mac it has no option at all.

Help appreciated!

Well, then yours is acting the same as my Epson (which, I am assuming, is the fact that faxing is not supported by the latest OS) - I'd check the manual (or contact Canon support) and see if there is an option to use the printer as a fax machine (without needing the Mac) - if you're talking to their support, make sure you explain the you're on Mountain Lion (or whatever OS you're on).

If you go to System Preferences->Print & Scan and select the + button at the bottom of the printer list this window opens:

Notince the Fax tab that is where you setup the fax machine. Also if you press the ? at the bottom of the Print & Scan preference window you'll get the OS X help pages for setting up printers, scanners and fax machines.

Yes, I have sent emails to both Apple and Canon and waiting to hear back from them.

I dont want to sound dumb but can you tell me how can I check which software I am on? When I click Apple > About this mac > it opens a windows and found I am on: "Software OS X 10.8.2 (12C2034)" Is it Lion, Leopard or something else?

Thanks,

10.8.2 = Mountain Lion (Lion is 10.7.x, Snow Leopard 10.6.x).

FWIW, I was not able to add my AIO as a fax machine because there is no software available to use, so i have to fax using the LCD panel (with fax commands/entries - see the article referenced above).

I also do not have a "fax PDF" option as shown here (since my iMac simply does not recognize my printer as a fax machine without additional software):

You might want to check and see if you have that option; also check your Canon software to see if there is anything fax related (or maybe on their website/download page).

Thanks Guys!

Yes, have gone through all this earlier and nothing seems to be working out. 😟

The very first line of this link is having a problem with my new computer becuase there is no telephone line so I am assuming there is no modem in the computer itself that is why I want to use the USB cable which is already connected to the printer and use the printer's mdem.

http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10887

"You can fax files directly from your computer to any fax machine or computer that’s set up to receive faxes. If your computer has a modem connected to a phone line, it’s automatically configured to send faxes."

Any more ideas 🙂 ?

Cheers!
