Connect the iPad to the Mac and launch iTunes
Select the iPad under the devices heading on the left side of iTunes.
Click on the Info tab in the iTunes window on the right
Click on Sync Contacts
Select the address book from which you want to sync the contacts.
Click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes.
More on syncing here.
Thanks for the reply, Demo. I tried what you suggested w/ strange results! First, I upgraded my iTunes to 11.0.1 (12) and then tried it. That was a requirement I read somewhere on the Apple site (btw, my iMac is running 10.6.8 and I have NO plans to go higher at this point.
When I finally found the iPad, I "thought" I was syncing my contacts and the iMac screen indicated I was but when I opened "Contacts" on the iPad, nothing! Did it three times....nothing.
According to the info I cited above, I'm OK on requirements. Any other thoughts? I'm wide open!
Thanks for taking the time for me..... Jack

You Mac OS meets the minimu for syncing with iTunes, but 10.6.8 IS the minimum. Nonetheless it should work. I assume that you were running something under iTunes 10.7 and if you needed to update, you were directed to iTunes 11.0.1 which is the very latest update. So your software is all good for syncing.
Try this now. Launch iTunes and go to View>Show sidebar. You should be able to see your iPad under the devices heading now if you weren't sure if you had actually selected it before. Go through the steps again and see if it works.
This is a little on the old side, but it still works the same way. Look thought this and makes sure this is what you are doing.

Yes, I was running an older v of iTunes. I tried your new suggestions w/ no success. Again, the message at the top of the screen indicates syncing but when I open app 'contacts', nothing other there then what I entered manually.
Is there a 'find' on the iPad I could use???? BTW, I tried the "Dummies" but it seemed to be for Windoze.
Thanks for your patience.... Jack
PS: I cannot select which contacts I want to use....the only selection I have is "All Contacts".
Yes it was for Windoze, but the process is the same in iTunes whether running OS X or Windows. Should have made that clear. Sorry.
For the home screen on the iPad, swipe to the right to get to the iPad's Spotlight feature. The keyboard will pop up and you can type in the search field to find certain things on the device. To see how you can configure Spotlight go to Settings>General>Spotlight Search. Contacts are one of the items that you can search for on the iPad.
Are you able to select your Entourage Address book in the Info tab of the iTunes window? Is it even an option for you?
Found the spotlight search, etc. No, I can't select my Entourage address book. No option either. I was able to sync my Safari bookmarks successfully! A small triumph for an old guy rocking 80! Spotlight didn't help....yet.
Demo, my wife is insisting I stumble downstairs and have dinner w/ her.
Thanks for all your help... I'l try tomorrow.Jack
Age is just your frame of mind. Enjoy dinner, food for thought for tomorrow .....
What do you seen in the Info tab of iTunes?
Just thought of this. See if it applies.
To sync contacts with your computer, choose "Sync Contacts with" within iTunes for Windows, or "Sync Address Book Contacts" on your Mac.
You can sync your contacts with:
